Main Purpose and Function

The Senior Electrical Engineer manages the delivery of annual electrical work and manages the Electrical Design team, including delivery of electrical drafting, design and engineering services. The position establishes and implements electrical technical specifications, standards and related work processes.

 

The position reports directly to the Associate Director, Electrical Design.  The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible to oversee the electrical design teams. This position is required to deliver timely, quality services to clients internal and external to the City of Vancouver, including but not exclusive to other sections within the Streets division, Electrical and Traffic Operations, Streets Activities, Sustainability and Utility Management Branch, Transportation Division, particularly the Traffic and Data Management branch and Transportation Design branch, other City Departments, and developers and consultants. The position also partners with external stakeholders with BIAs, BC Hydro, and Coast Mountain Bus Company.

 

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Leads the Electrical Design staff in delivering on strategic objectives and the continuous improvement of services related to the City’s electrical infrastructure. 

 

Asset Management:

  • Assists in prioritization, administration and execution of the electrical infrastructure capital plan (approx. $4M annually), working in partnership with the Divisional Asset Manager/Engineer and Operations

  • Oversees and directs the delivery of electrical capital projects including the design and construction phases, in accordance with the Engineering Project Management Framework
  • Coordinates with internal and external customers to ensure that design services are provided in a timely and suitable manner, meeting project schedules
  • Develops business cases and provides strategic analysis to new and emerging initiatives
  • Ensures use and sustainment of corporate IT systems to manage information, including asset management, financial management 

 

Technical work:

  • Establishes and maintains the City’s electrical specifications and drafting standards

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a Professional Engineer designation and minimum 6 years related experience in design and construction project engineering work, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Experience managing staff and HR issues in a union environment.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia.
  • Project Management Credentials (PMP) or equivalent is preferred

This position is proficient in using various word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.


Job Type: Full-Time (Non-Union)
Work Location: 790 BELLGRAVE. DELTA, BC V3M 5R9
Shift: Tuesday - Saturday (5 days/Week) 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM PST 
(shifts can vary and/or extend due to operational requirements) 

Compensationstarting at $17.40 hourly

Responsibilities:

  • Performs general office duties, i.e. answering telephone, data entry, filing, etc.
  • Prepares reports and presentations.
  • Prepares and/or coordinates information for internal use and distribution.
  • Performs various ad hoc tasks.
  • Provides coverage in other departments, during fluctuations in volume, vacation coverage, or leave of absence coverage and as required by business needs.

Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma, GED, or International equivalent
  • Minimum of six-months office support experience
  • Demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment under supervision with a high attention to detail
  • Effective oral/written communication, problem-solving, basic research, and time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Accurate and rapid data entry

As a Dock Supervisor, you are accountable for ensuring that the dock employees are working in a safe and efficient manner. You are responsible to ensure smooth operations, efficiencies, people management, freight flow, change implementation, and safety, aligned to operational expectations and guidelines. This position is all about the effective management of freight flow through the management of people and safety, continuous improvement, problem solving and effective communication.

How You’ll Help: 

  • Lead and manage a fast paced and high volume dock operation though a team of supervisors, lead hands, and front line employees to ensure the accurate and timely completion of all dock activities and supporting office tasks.
  • Coach and develop team members using a positive attitude, collaboration, clear communication, and direction. Make informed decisions based on safety, service, and productivity standards, with an understanding of company processes, policies and procedures.
  • Initiate and lead process and customer experience improvements, while meeting deadlines and controlling costs.
  • Understand and use key metrics to manage terminal performance, including load factor, on-time delivery, LMS, and freight flow.
  • Prioritize the unloading and loading of freight, moving all damaged freight and returns appropriately.
  • Recognize risks and problems and work collaboratively with others to practical and speedy resolution. 
  • Ensure and monitor the continuous flow of communications and information relating to freight delivery so the appropriate parties are aware of solutions/actions to be taken to ensure safe and timely operations. 
  • Other related duties related as may be required.

Your Skills and Experience: 

  • Minimum of secondary education, with preference of post-secondary education (general stream), or a combination of education and experience.
  • Forklift certified
  • Trained in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • WHMIS certified
  • Previous Transportation or operational experience is preferred, various roles within transportation would be beneficial 
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a terminal setting, preferably in the transportation industry.
  • Experience leading a team of front line employees, managers, and supervisors
  • Contributing to the development of and managing to an annual operating budget.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to get things done through others and people development.
  • Computer skills with MS Office products and web based programs.  Experience with Truckmate a definite asset
