Position Summary

This position enforces fire prevention regulations of the City of Regina and the Province of Saskatchewan. An Inspector will conduct inspections on all types of new/existing buildings to ensure conformity/compliance with applicable by-laws, codes, regulations and prepares and presents public fire safety education programs and other applicable duties as assigned. This position reports to the Fire Marshal.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Investigates complaints and follow-up on fire department inspections to initiate enforcement activities, when and as required
  • Inspects new and existing occupancies, and installations to identify fire hazards, deficiencies in fire safety systems, construction and Building and Occupant Fire Safety to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, regulations, provincial statutes, municipal bylaws and zoning applications.
  • Performs fire safety plan review, general and specialized inspections that include sprinkler, fire alarm and commercial cooking systems.
  • Conducts fire/explosion investigations to establish cause, origin and circumstances, secures and preserves evidence and testifies in court as required.
  • Conducts building plan reviews and assists with final building inspections, when and as required.
  • Inspects public displays or gatherings as required.
  • Inspects the storage and handling of flammable, combustible, toxic, corrosive and other hazardous materials.
  • Reviews findings of inspections with the owner/occupant and conducts follow up inspections to ensure conformance has been achieved, maintains records of findings, prepares reports for legal processes.
  • Assists fire suppression personnel with inspection functions, provides follow-up assistance and guidance with preplanning.
  • Supports public educations initiatives, able to communicate to large groups, presents fire prevention information when and as required to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Facilitates inspections and provides consultative services to City Departments.
  • Follows all rules and regulations as set out in the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Key Qualifications

Fire Inspector I

The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are obtained through completion of Grade 12 Diploma and typically a minimum of six (6) years as an active Fire Fighter or Fire Protection Engineering Technology diploma coupled with IFSAC Certified Fire Inspector NFPA 1031, Level I and II and IFSAC Certified Fire Investigator 1033. Public Fire & Life Educator NFPA 1035, other NFPA certifications, ICS 100 and communication experience and exposure would be an asset.

Fire Inspector II

The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are obtained through completion of Grade 12 Diploma and a minimum of one (1) year as a Fire Inspector I; coupled with IFSAC Certified Fire Inspector NFPA 1031, Level I and II and IFSAC Certified Fire Investigator 1033. Fire Inspector III

  • Knowledge of the current contents and application of the Provincial Legislation and various bylaws and codes applicable to all types of fire hazards.

  • Knowledge of fire safety planning and required emergency procedures.

  • Knowledge of departmental policies/operational SOP's relating to Prevention and Public Education.

  • Knowledge of fire protection systems i.e. fire alarms, sprinkler systems, water sources.

  • Knowledge of applicable bylaws, codes, regulations, standards and provincial statutes.

In a unionized environment, the Maintenance department at Maple Leaf Foods operates with a concept of a team environment to ensure plant efficiencies. As part of Maple Leaf Food’s Maintenance team, the individual will be responsible for maintaining and servicing equipment used in the facility for the daily production of our products. Maple Leaf Foods conducts a comprehensive wage survey each year to ensure our rates are competitive. The ability to work rotating shifts, including afternoon shift (1:00 am end time) and weekends, are part of this role.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

  • Must be able to install, troubleshoot, and repair complex production equipment with minimal supervision
  • Operate production equipment and check performance as required
  • Strong on PM (preventative maintenance) procedures
  • Carry out oral/printed work requests and apply corrective action
  • Perform regular work orders and account for inventory and labor on a computerized maintenance program
  • Be able to read and understand mechanical drawings/schematics
  • Machining and fabricating for equipment repairs and/or upgrades
  • Enhance equipment performance, recommending improvements and implementing
  • Understand and adhere to all plant Food Safety and Health and Safety Polices
  • Ensure all job-related operations are in compliance with GMPs, HACCP, WHMIS and health & safety requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What You’ll Bring:

  • Must hold a valid Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Journeyperson Certificate
  • 1 – 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment would be an asset
  • Extensive mechanical knowledge including power transmission, pneumatics and hydraulics
  • Knowledge of conveyors, industrial/stationary engines, pumps/compressor, grinders, welding equipment, electrical/electronic controls, lathes/machining tools, power tools, fans/blowers, hydraulic systems and high-speed packaging equipment
  • Highly motivated – able to work well in a team and alone with minimal supervision
  • Sense of urgency and attention to detail
  • Some heavy lifting may be required
  • Basic computer ability coupled with strong communication skills

This role also offers the exciting opportunity to set up and manage tourism booths at various events in the City of Regina, where you will distribute informational materials, guides, and sell promotional items as needed.

Key Duties:

  • Manage inventory and ensure an adequate supply of information materials for the kiosk.
  • Support the director and assist with administrative duties for the work unit.

Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Have exceptional customer service & communication skills for in person, on the phone, and via email.
  • Strong organizational skills & time management skills
  • Ability to work independently with strong judgement.
  • Understand the municipal organization structure and related external agencies' programs and services related to tourism.
  • Skilled with office productivity software, internet browsers, search engines, enterprise software, discipline-specific software, and technology devices.
  • Responding sensitively and appropriately to customer needs.
  • Providing written responses to email and social media queries

 

Key Education & Experience:

  • The successful candidate will have completed secondary school or equivalency and will have on-the-job customer service experience.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Must hold a valid driver’s license with expected traveling typically around Regina city limits to various events at various locations as required.
  • Required to move, lift, and carry deliveries/objects/equipment/supplies/files to different locations.
  • Sitting and standing intermittently through a shift.
  • Comfortable working independently and alone throughout a shift.  
  • Working on a computer/tablet.
