JOB SUMMARY

The Waste Processing & Disposal Branch is responsible for the Waste Diversion and Waste Processing programs for solid waste operations, including the 3Rs strategy, Waste Diversion Master Plan, compost processing, pilots and marketing, management of Household Special Waste facility, mobile depots and integration of product stewardship initiatives, public programs to ensure maximum diversion, management of three landfill sites (one in post closure state) including regular waste disposal, and leachate by-products including Environmental Assessments and optimization programs to maximize landfill capacity. 

Working as part of a team of Special Equipment Operators, you are responsible for safely and effectively inspecting, operating, cleaning, maintaining and securing different types of special equipment used at the Trail Road Waste Facility requirements in accordance with all applicable legislation, policies and procedures.  Equipment is used for loading, transporting, placement, disposal and covering waste and cover material on a daily basis for picking up, transporting and disposal of residential, industrial and commercial waste, recycled materials and support service. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 10 

Minimum of 13 months of experience operating heavy and/or special equipment, including Landfill and/or heavy construction equipment, including several months of experience in the Solid Waste Industry.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates

KNOWLEDGE

  • Operational characteristics and the safe use of vehicles, equipment and machinery used within the Solid Waste Branch;
  • Methods and techniques of performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment;
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Department and Branch as they pertain to the equipment;
  • Performance of duties relating to the position of Special Equipment Operator;
  • Policies and procedures in relation to vehicles and equipment operation and maintenance;
  • Ontario Highway Traffic Act Regulations and laws; 
  • Operation of a two way radio;

  • Knowledge of elevation and grading principles; 
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers;

The Counter Services team responds to community needs through the provision of optimum client service delivery employing a centralized one-stop approach. Counter Services consists of seven Client Services Centres and three Provincial Offences offices, which offer a variety of services such as pet registrations, marriage ceremonies, payment intake, parking permits and provincial court services to name a few. Counter Services staff process over 250,000 transactions and handle over $190 million in revenue per year for the City. 

You are responsible for providing information and customer service for a wide range of municipal and provincial services, programs, policies, procedures, permits and fee structures, as part of a team of agents, delivered through a ServiceOttawa Centre; ensuring service continuity in responding to inquiries and urgent requests from the public, elected officials, internal staff, and other government agencies through a variety of platforms, primarily by in-person and including electronic/web, email and phone in the most efficient and professional manner possible, minimizing referrals and transfers to other subject matter experts, where possible, and ensuring follow up where required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of customer service delivery mechanisms, practices and strategies to resolving customer related complaints
