These ranges from such fundamental services as water supply, sewerage, drainage, refuse removal, street access, and lighting, to regulatory functions such as traffic control, parking enforcement, transportation planning, and preservation of utility and communication corridors.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Street Cleaning Operations in the Sanitation Services Branch keeps our City streets, laneways and parks clean. The Operations Worker II drives City vehicles and performs manual labour in the collection of litter, debris and abandoned waste.
Successful applicants' availability must meet Branch expectations in order to continue employment with the Branch. Functional and/or physical assessments related to the bona fide position requirements may be required.

 

This position is for Afternoon Shift only. Afternoon Shift works four afternoons per week, including weekends. Afternoon Shift operates on a compressed work week that includes a 10-hour shift (10:00am – 8:30pm) scheduled over a 7-day work week. The successful candidates may be required to adjust shifts (Day, Afternoon or Night) as operationally required and in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

 

The following shifts are currently available and others may be offered according to operational needs:

  • Thursday through Sunday, 10:00am-8:30pm
  • Friday through Monday, 10:00am-8:30pm
  • Saturday through Tuesday, 10:00am-8:30pm

 

Specific Duties

  • Perform manual cleaning with a rake, shovel and leaf blower on assigned maps/beats.
  • Tip/empty litter receptacles on streets and in parks on assigned maps/beats.
  • Clear lanes of abandoned debris on assigned maps/beats.
  • Special events preparation and clean up across the city as assigned.
  • Drivers will dump waste material at the Vancouver Transfer Station or designated compactors or dump zones as needed/directed.
  • Respond to weather specific events that cause risk to public safety or assets in the event of such things as flooding, snow, ice and storms.
  • Document completed work such as pre/post trip vehicle inspections in compliance with Branch policies.
  • Accurately record the results of investigations or work completed in the field in response to Service Requestsfrom 311.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment and vehicles.
  • Proper use and storage of equipment and tools.
  • Qualified and trained employees are eligible to operate rear-load Garbage Trucks, Sweepers and Flusher equipment at the higher rate specific to the work for the job classification.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Up to completion of high school.
  • Labouring and semi-skilled experience with small hand tools.
  • Driving experience and knowledge of the City of Vancouver roadways.
  • Experience operating small pick-up trucks, mid to large size trucks, sweepers, flushers, garbage trucks and/or experience operating a Class 3 vehicle or higher preferred.

 

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or higher with Air Brakes and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record is required
  • Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail
  • Candidates must attach the following to be considered:
    • Commercial Driving Records Abstract (N Print) for the past 5 years (no more than 14 days prior to this posting)

Main Purpose & Function 
This is skilled and semiskilled arboriculture work involving pruning, maintenance, planting and removal of boulevard and park trees. Tree pruning and removal is hazardous work performed with minimum supervision.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The Arborist IA is the lead worker responsible for allocating, checking and reviewing the work of an arboriculture operations crew.
  • The successful candidate will respond to enquiries from the general public in the course of carrying out assignments, participate in preparing presentations, public demonstrations and provides on the job training to subordinates in tree care operations.
  • The Arborist IA will also be responsible for performing tree pruning operations around energized hydro lines and pruning boulevard and park trees using power saws, and other hand tools. This position would operate an aerial bucket truck and climb boulevard and park trees when required, using ropes and safety harness, operating a chipping machine as required and occasionally carrying out cabling and bracing.
  • Additional responsibilities include planting and removing trees as required with using hand tools and mechanized equipment.
  • The Arborist IA will have to lift and transplant established trees to accommodate site modifications, identifies diseased trees or trees that are potentially hazardous to public safety, and undertakes emergency control action as required and informs superiors of situations.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of the tenth school grade plus considerable experience in street tree operations and in the operation of a boom truck, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience in the use of climbing equipment and rigging techniques, and in planting and transplanting techniques.
  • Utility Arborist – Certificate of qualification is required.
  • Level I First Aid Certificate is required.
  • Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate when required
  • Power System Safety Certificate is an asset.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of arboriculture methods, standards and practices, City and Park Board safety protocols, and arboriculture and utility arboriculture safe work procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of growth habits and maintenance requirements of various tree species.
  • Working knowledge of arboriculture pests and diseases, and integrated pest management practices.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of power and hand tools used in pruning, planting, removal, cable and bracing, pest control and general tree maintenance
  • Skill in the use of safety harness and ropes used in climbing trees.
  • Skill in the operation and servicing of equipment used in the work and in the use of tools used in minor servicing and repair tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform hazardous climbing and pruning tasks at considerable heights and ability to identify hazardous trees.
  • Ability to perform manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to identify hazardous and diseased trees and to take emergency remedial action.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to assign, check and review the work of subordinates performing semiskilled and unskilled tasks participate in conducting performance reviews for same.
  • Ability to keep records related to work performed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates.
  • Ability to meet the public and answer a variety of questions regarding tree management activities, and participate in preparing presentations and public demonstrations.

 

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
    • 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

This role will provide qualified candidates an opportunity to work in and across a diverse portfolio of facilities and spaces in the City, including several 2010 Olympic venues.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities 

The Utility Maintenance Worker II is responsible for the operational, janitorial and minor maintenance work in the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation ice rink facilities including, the functions related to the operation and service of ice arena surfaces, refrigeration plants and related maintenance and equipment.

 

The UMW II will also be responsible for performing and coordinating routine janitorial functions including cleaning change rooms and washrooms; washing and waxing floor; replenishing supplies; collecting and transferring refuse and other duties as required.

 

The successful candidates must be prepared to work in various park and recreation locations within the organization. Candidates must have availability to meet a variety of shift requirements including: morning, day, afternoon, night and weekends.

 

Qualifications 

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a recognized certification program in Building Service Work supplemented by technical training related to the work plus sound related experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience

  • Technical Safety BC Ice Facility Operator Certificate or higher required

  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia required

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of recreation facility maintenance and repair

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules and regulations

  • Working knowledge of ice rink refrigeration systems.

  • Working knowledge of ice-making methods and re-surfacing equipment.

  • Working knowledge of the materials, methods and equipment used in janitorial and building maintenance work.

  • Ability to operate ice resurfacing equipment and any other tools or equipment related to the work.

  • Ability to prepare simple reports.

  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public groups and users of the facility to ensure observance of the rules and regulations.

  • Ability to observe equipment in operation and report on any malfunctions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Good health and strength sufficient to perform a variety of manual tasks in janitorial and building maintenance work.

  • Above average manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude.

  • Under supervision of a senior engineer or senior planner, participate in the planning, design and implementation of projects of medium to high complexity related to Rapid Transit projects.
  • Prepares research, technical studies, reports and presentations on topics of moderate complexity, including undertaking relevant field observations and notes and verifying the accuracy of the content.
  • Under supervision of a senior engineer or senior planner, leads the development of conceptual geometric designs using AutoCAD, applying transportation planning and engineering principles to support the implementation of rapid transit projects.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented with post-secondary education in Civil Engineering technology, transportation or other relevant area of study, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of current transportation planning and engineering design principles and methods.
  • Working knowledge of the City's transportation policies and networks, community planning process and land use
  • Knowledge of the components of urban street design and an awareness of concepts such as Complete Streets and ability to apply related principles to conceptual designs.

There are three positions available (2 Heavy-Duty Mechanic and 1 Commercial Transport Mechanic). The regular work schedule is from 3:10 PM to 12:34 AM, Monday to Friday. The successful candidates may be required to adjust shifts and locations as operationally required.

 

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Heavy Duty Mechanic or Commercial Transport Certificate of Qualifications (T.Q.), Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement
  • Red Seal certification is preferred.
  • Completion of Grade 10, supplemented by technical courses related to the work.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the automotive and heavy-duty mechanical trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of braking systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade.
