About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary part-time Plasma Nurse to join our dynamic Plasma Operations team. 

 

The Plasma Operations team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by collecting plasma in a safe manner to enable safe products which save lives every day. In this role, you will be responsible for administrative support to all program activities and you will provide support in accordance with all regulations, standards and good manufacturing practice.

Formula for success

  • Leveraging your ability to communicate effectively with donors, you will conduct registration and confidential screening to determine eligibility and build and promote a positive donor experience.    

  • Utilizing your strong people skills, you will provide donors with information, instruction, and advice on plasma donation.  

  • Drawing on your knowledge and experience you will provide coaching and consultation to donor centre staff, acting as team lead for collection events as needed. 

  • With your excellent interpersonal skills, you will work in a diverse team environment assisting in the collection of plasma, which save lives daily. 

  • At mobile events within our communities, you will assist in setting up booths, tables, and other equipment to ensure donor clinics are properly set up for use.

Reporting to the Nurse Manager, the Registered Practical Nurse plays an integral role in the day-to-day operations of the homes.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides nursing care and develops and modifies care plans for residents. Observes, monitors, and evaluates condition of residents.
  • Provides leadership/direction to Care Team during the shift in collaboration with the RN.
  • Reports vital signs, injuries, and general physical and emotional condition. Reports resident critical incidents as per policy.  Attends to critical incidents involving residents.
  • Attends team meetings.
  • Evaluates the residents' plan of care and revises as indicated by residents' health status.
  • Measures and records blood pressure, temperature, respirations, pulse, and weight using equipment, such as blood pressure cuff.
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medications and treatments (i.e. eye drops and application of ointments & creams).
  • Administers insulin injections and records quantities administered. Assesses condition and administers complex skin and wound treatments. Informs residents about medications and side effects.
  • Ensures that medication supplies meet designated inventories. Orders medication and medical/nursing supplies.
  • Checks orders, packages, labels, and stores medication and medical supplies. Prepares and applies clean dressings and bandages.
  • Cleans wounds and lesions, replaces bandages, and removes stitches and clips. Administers first aid including C.P.R.
  • Orients new residents and staff and familiarizes them with surroundings. Notifies departments and individuals of admittance.
  • Provides orientation and ongoing coaching for new staff.
  • Provides orientation for new residents and their families and introduces them to other residents, staff, etc.
  • Records and secures personal valuables.
  • Prepares resident for transfer or departure, including organization of personal belongings, contacting of appropriate organization (hospital, coroner's office, etc.), and completion of required documentation.
  • Schedules appointments with hospitals, clinics, diagnostic services, and health specialist, arranging for transportation and/or escort.
  • Ensures results/hospital records are available to residents. Feeds residents or assists with adaptive eating devices.
  • Provides support and leadership during meal service (ie: offering beverages, etc).
  • Administers enteral feeds ensuring resident safety and maintains appropriate documentation.
  • Provides personal care for residents (i.e. feeding, hygiene, bathing, dressing and undressing, toileting, ambulation, and transferring using applicable electric/hydraulic/manual equipment and lifting devices).
  • Assists residents with proper exercise and ambulation techniques to support rehabilitative and activation programs.
  • Prepares and maintains documentation (i.e. charts, records, and incident reports).
  • Resident and family planning care; offers emotional support; answers questions from resident and family. Works collaboratively with resident and family/chosen family in planning care. 
  • Maintains personal care records.
  • Changes linens, makes beds and sorts and bags soiled linen as necessary. Orders office supplies, checks orders and stocks shelves.
  • Obtains admission history regarding medical history, immunizations, etc. Educates clients and emphasizes important health and medical information.
  • Refers and advocates with community agencies regarding health and social services.
  • Administers medication and monitors for side effects.
  • Assists in coaching and training students.
  • Ensures proper storage and handling of all vaccinations ensuring adherence to cold chain procedures.

 

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

 

  1. Current registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  2. Experience working as an RPN within a community-based setting, including working with the elderly population.
  3. Experience working in acute care, complex continuing care, rehabilitation, mental health and/or long-term care.

 

You must also have:

 

  • Ability to provide resident-centered care in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the Long-Term Care Homes Act and its regulations.
  • Ability to complete the annual RAI-MDS certification as per Ministry of Health requirements for Assessment and Intelligence System Inc. (AIS).
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of people including residents, families and the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Ability to obtain Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification. 
  • Ability to document utilizing electronic software applications.
  • Ability to work in a highly demanding work environment with many competing priorities and deadlines.

Additional Information:

  • Thorough knowledge of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis prevention and treatment issues.
  • Thorough knowledge of harm reduction practice, drug use including safer drug use practices, safer supply, opioid substitution.

The Health, Safety, and Environment Coordinator coordinates environmental and health program processes and activities to assist the team in maintaining compliance, mitigating and managing environmental, health and safety risks and improving related performance. This position is more required to manage environmental issues although some health and safety tasks can be assigned to the coordinator.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Coordination 

  • Acts as the first point-of-contact for environmental and health inquiries and incidents.
  • Provides guidance to team members on environmental and health matters, and escalates inquiries, where appropriate
  • Coordinates the implementation of environmental, health and safety programs along with related processes, procedures and resources
  • Coordinates environmental, health and safety activities including but not limited to attending tenant OSH committee meetings, attending environmental committee meetings and activities, undertaking incident investigation and resolution, completing equipment and systems registration, developing emergency response procedures and business continuity planning activities, completing and delivering training, completing annual management system re-registration, managing data and generating reports, and conducting environmental compliance audits.
  • Researches environmental, health and safety matters; provides findings and recommendations.

  • Create and maintain documentation including but not limited to instruction sheets, checklists, forms, and training materials.

  • Conducts regular inspections of facilities to mitigate any Environmental regulatory issues and/or Health and Safety Concerns before an incident or service call is received.
  • Maintains business continuity and emergency management plans and procedures
  • Participates in field inspections, job observations, health, safety and environment audits and other types of reviews for the purpose of monitoring compliance to environmental and health regulations and identifying risks.  Provides findings about risks and suggestions for improvement.

Incident Investigation, Resolution & Reduction

  • Assists in the investigation and resolution of incidents including root-cause analysis and providing probable causes of incidents and recommendations for resolution
  • Coordinates the implementation of corrective and preventative measures
  • Assists in the identification and analysis of trends.  Communicates observations and provides suggestions for incident reduction measures

Audit Compliance, Data Maintenance & Reporting 

  • Maintains all environmental, health and safety data including but not limited to incident data, and regulatory and process compliance data within applicable databases and all other types of information storage systems
  • Assists in the audit of compliance records and all other environmental, health and safety data
  • Prepares and distributes various environmental, health and safety related reports including but not limited to incident reports
  • Experience with database development, programing and maintenance considered an asset
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Strong background in environmental management system development and administration, with knowledge of environmental regulations and environmental compliance auditing an asset.
  • Certification in one or more of the following – Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety; Certificate in Environmental Management through a Community College; University degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies
  • 1 to 3 years of environmental, health and safety work experience

  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience in Health and safety management system that includes:

    • Project and/or Change Management experience preferably in the health and safety management system in a large and complex organization

Assets:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 4 year university degree in Nursing (BScN)

Post-basic preparation in gerontology is desirable

Membership in Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) is desirable
