Responsible for preventative maintenance, pre-inspection maintenance, diagnostics and repairs on the company’s fleet of trucks in accordance with the applicable level of training and apprenticeship.
How You’ll Help
- Responsible for the maintenance and repair of trucks according to work orders and in keeping with level of training/apprenticeship (see below)
- Maintaining safe shop environment (may include snow removal from the roof, de-icing, washing vehicles, sweeping, etc.
- Journeyperson Technicians independently repair and maintain trucks (see above) and provide general direction, guidance, mentoring and training to Pre-Apprentice and Apprentice Technicians.
- Maintenance and repair of truck bodies, including miscellaneous accessories such as hubcaps, decals, reflective tape, painting, etc.
- Documentation of all findings and work done.
- Lead Journeyperson Technicians provide work direction for all team members and act as escalation point for complex maintenance and repairs.
- Provide guidance, mentoring and training to Pre-Apprentice and Apprentice Technicians
- Work independently to complete diagnostic, service, repair, and maintain trucks.
- Maintain and repair truck bodies, including miscellaneous accessories such as hubcaps, decals, reflective tape, painting, etc.
- Document and update Service Supervisor/Service Manager on completion time changes, all findings, work done and potential future service requirements.
- Other duties as may be required.
Your Skills & Experience:
- Post-secondary training in truck repair and/or completion of truck technician certificate course
- Preference given to applicants with Red Seal journeyperson certification
- Additional training in tire repairs and/or refrigeration will be considered an asset
- CVIP, an asset
- Candidates enrolled in trailer repair apprenticeship may also be considered.
- Valid Class 1 license also considered an asset
- Previous work experience in an industrial environment, preferably in the transportation industry.
- Previous experience and qualification to perform Safety inspections is required in this position.
- Physically fit and able to lift, move, reach, bend, walk, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel and crouch for extended period of time
- Ability to work in tight spaces
- Strong knowledge of transportation industry’s rules and regulations regarding transport trucks, trailers, and components

- May work independently with little or no supervision

Minimum Position Requirements
Required Training, Certifications and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 10; preferable supplemented by technical training related to the work plus some related experience; completion of a recognized program in building service work OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Ice Facility Operator or Refrigeration Operator (5th class refrigeration) Certificate from the BC Safety Authority.

- Assists with the inspection and minor maintenance of valves, service connections and appurtenances.
- Performs field sampling and testing of basic water quality parameters.
- Monitors and maintains system instrumentation for water loss management, including flow meters and pressure monitors, uses leak listening equipment as required.
- Assists with the installation, removal and maintenance of various temporary water services.
- Assists with the response to, and resolution of, water contamination events, including water main chlorination and de-chlorination procedures.

Qualifications

- Assists in enhancing tenant and customer satisfaction and maintaining positive relations through manner in which work is performed and services delivered.

- Collaborate with facility management to ensure seamless equipment operation and minimal tenant disruptions.
Proactive Communication and Escalation:
- Must be able and willing to work shifts, be available for on-call/standby and emergency call-outs as they arise
- Communicate technical information effectively, with a focus on building equipment, to internal teams and external vendors.
- Escalate critical equipment-related issues to minimize downtime and tenant disruptions.
- Maintain open and technical communication channels with stakeholders, emphasizing equipment status and maintenance updates.
Work Order Management:
- Manages work order life cycle in partnership with the Central Work Order Management Team progressing the work form dispatched through to completion and records resolution data within service maintenance management database. Ensures work completed meets quality, contract response and all other requirements.
- In partnership with the BGIS CMMS Team, Assists in the implementation of preventative maintenance (PM) program. Ensures that deficiencies are identified, recorded and escalated, and that related documents are maintained.
- Ensures the way work is performed is following corporate and legislated policies, procedures, practices and guidelines related to environmental, health and safety, fire protection and any other applicable requirements.
- Prioritize technical work orders related to building equipment to minimize business disruptions for tenants.
- Efficiently coordinate technical assignments and oversee the timely completion of equipment-related tasks.
- Maintain thorough records of technical work order history, including equipment-specific details and expenses.
Financial Ownership (Including Quotes Management):
- Submits all expenditures on a timely basis.
- In partnership with the Maintenance Lead, FM, and Regional Director, manage the budget for building equipment maintenance, seeking cost-effective solutions to ensure tenant operations are unaffected.
- Solicit and evaluate technical quotes for equipment repairs, maintenance, and upgrades, with a strong focus on minimizing tenant disruptions.
Vendor Management:
- Oversee technical vendors and contractors with specialized expertise in building equipment maintenance.
- Hold vendors to high technical standards, emphasizing the importance of maintaining equipment integrity to prevent tenant disruptions.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- High school diploma plus trades training and/or certification or licensing.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience providing preventive and corrective maintenance on heating ventilation and air conditions systems, or pneumatic or hydraulic systems.
- Sound knowledge of processes and practices relating to facility operations and maintenance
- Demonstrated ability to maintain, troubleshoot and repair (as per applicable qualifications) mechanical and other building systems and equipment
- Possesses a strong environmental, health, and safety mindset.
- Strong client-service orientation along with a high sense of urgency
- Knowledge and understanding of Building Automation Systems (BAS)
- Effective communication skills for the purpose of data relay, exchange, feedback, and clarification
- Mentoring skills required to support lower level technician’s development
- Must be able and willing to work shifts, be available for on-call/standby and emergency call-outs as they arise
- Must strictly adhere to Health and Safety policies including wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Must be capable of obtaining appropriate security clearance
- Knowledge and understanding of HVAC Systems

This position reports directly to the VFRS Fleet & Equipment Services Shop Supervisor. The successful applicants will be integral members of a highly skilled team of mechanical technicians performing technical troubleshooting, scheduled preventative maintenance and non-scheduled maintenance. VFRS has a diverse fleet of fire fighting apparatus including Engines, Ladders, Heavy Rescues, Aerial Platforms, Fireboats and Medical Units. VFRS’ fleet also consists of Specialty apparatus for Technical Rescue, Hazardous Materials, Command, Fire Investigations and other support and administration vehicles. Fleet & Equipment Services is responsible for yearly commercial vehicle inspections, pump testing, non-destructive aerial testing and small equipment preventative maintenance. The successful applicants will perform repairs in all fields including electrical diagnostics, engine and transmission computer controls, hydraulics and foam injection systems.
Vancouver Fire Rescue Services EVT Mechanics work a four on four off schedule with a rotating on-call schedule to provide support for overnight mechanical breakdowns and respond to major incidents in the City of Vancouver. In recent years, VFRS mechanics have also responded alongside VFRS suppression fire fighters to the devastating wildfires throughout British Columbia.
REQUIREMENTS
• Inter-Provincial Certificate of Qualification as a Commercial Transport Mechanic OR
Inter-Provincial Certificate of Qualification as a Heavy Duty Mechanic
• CVSE Commercial Vehicle Inspectors Certification
• British Columbia Class 3 Driver’s license with Air Brake endorsement
