Main Purpose and Function

Known as the “living room of the Downtown South,” The Gathering Place Community Centre offers educational, recreational, cultural and social programming for the benefit of low income people of the Downtown South.

The Security Attendant I is a front line position with primary responsibilities in relationship building with community members, and Centre safety, security, access control and incident response and reporting. Security Attendants work to ensure that the Centre is safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces for the public and staff. Violence prevention is a priority at the Centre. Security Attendants are expected to use defusing/de-escalating skills when responding to all volatile situations. Physical intervention is always a last resort.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

• Monitoring entrances and facilitating access control of the facilities;
• Monitoring and upholding the Centre’s Cod of Conduct and standards of behaviour are being observed;
• Making regular patrols of the building;
• Providing support in the event of an emergency including first aid and overdose response;
• Understanding the needs of and assisting patrons in a supportive manner by providing information and making referrals on the services and activities provided by the Centre and other community partners;
• Assisting with front desk clerical activities such as answering phones, distributing mail, simple data entry when needed;
• Communicating information to other staff by way of log entries, incident reports and emails;
• Communicating effectively using a two-way radio;
• Maintaining health and safety standards;
• Receiving routine deliveries;
• Ability to understand and uphold occupational health and safety policies and procedures, including specific policies related to COVID-19;
• Performing janitorial and other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Completion of Grade 10 (Grade 12 preferred);
• Knowledge of the Downtown Eastside community, local agencies, and services;
• Considerable knowledge of the Gathering Place Community Centre’s rules, services and operations
• Experience working in a community, social service or health care environment would be an asset
• Occupational First Aid Level I certification or the ability to obtain one would be an asset
• Fluency in a second language would be an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Considerable knowledge of the Downtown South, agencies, services and resources
• Considerable knowledge and understanding of addictions, mental illness, conflict resolution and violence prevention
• Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, including writing incident reports
• Proven ability to work with minimal supervision
• Proven ability to respond to incident using defusing and de-escalation techniques

About the Opportunity

• Develop, assess, monitor and adjust the Health and Safety program and related documents to address trends in incidents, hazards, injuries and tasks across all job positions.
• Provide strategic oversight of Fire and Emergency preparedness for all sites.
• Develop, assess, monitor and adjust fire and emergency resources, guidelines and training.
• Review and stay updated on regulatory changes to determine updates to the Health and Safety Program, Fire and Emergency plans.

About You

• A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and certificate or diploma in emergency management or a related discipline that includes courses in emergency planning, response, and hazard and risk assessment, is required.
• Minimum of 7 years of Safety and Emergency Preparedness experience

Under the supervision of an Aquatic Program Specialist or Aquatic Training Specialist, this position performs responsible lifeguard and/or instructional duties at any City of Regina aquatic facilities. The work assigned involves ensuring the safety of patrons and proper facility usage. This position may be transferred between aquatics facilities and will be required to work non-standard hours.

SUMMARY

Maintains security and safety of people and property in assigned facility. Observes and reports activities and incidents. Duties will include supervising the use of wand and metal detectors, service enhancement, and training.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Handling front desk is a major part of this role along with monitoring and reviewing CCTV cameras.

• Monitor traffic flow of checkpoints and recommend staffing adjustments as necessary.
• Follow proper procedure for all matters requiring escalation.
• Conduct foot patrols checking guard posts, doors, windows, data rooms, maintenance areas etc.
• Collect shift activity reports and turn in to District Manager for review.
• Ensure all posts are properly staffed.
• Conduct spot remediation training for Security Guards when needed.
• Relieve Security Guards for break/lunch
• Respond to escalations including all medical incidents.
• Escalate issues and/or violations to the District Manager.
• Access control provisions, screening visitors and ensuring visitors follow security protocols.
• Document and inform District Manager of Security Guards who are not meeting the SOP standards.
• Required to know, follow, and enforce safe work practices, and to be aware of company policies and procedures related to job safety, including safety rules and regulations. Employees are required to notify superiors upon becoming aware of unsafe working conditions.

MINIMUM HIRING STANDARDS:

• Security Supervisor experience (2.5 yrs minimum)
• At least 1 year of experience handling front desk and customer service.
• Experience scheduling guards would be preferred.
• Must have excellent communication skills.
• Must have a reliable means of transportation (public or private).
• Must have the ability to speak, read, and write English.
• Must have a High School Diploma or GED. Post Secondary education in a related field is an asset.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Mobile Patrols: Conduct routine mobile patrols of assigned locations which may include operating a vehicle to perform patrol, inspection, and/or incident response services. 
• Emergency Response: Respond promptly to emergency situations and incidents, taking appropriate action to ensure the safety of personnel and property.
• Surveillance: Monitor and report suspicious activities, hazards, or security concerns to the appropriate authorities.
• Customer Service: Interact professionally with clients, visitors, and employees, always providing excellent customer service.
• Report Writing: Complete accurate and detailed reports on incidents, observations, and activities during patrols.
• Access Control: Enforce access control measures, ensuring that only authorized individuals are allowed entry to designated areas.
• Adherence to Procedures: Strictly adhere to company policies, procedures, and guidelines to maintain a secure environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must have a Valid Security Guard License.
• Must have a valid G Driver's License with a clean driving record (min 5 years).
• Postsecondary education in Police Foundations, Criminology or equivalent, is an asset.
• Must be available to work rotational shifts, including weekends and holidays.
• Proficiency in using security equipment and technology.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
