BASIC PURPOSE

  • To ensure all assigned mechanical related tasks are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner with a high level of quality, using safe work practices acceptable to the customers’ satisfaction.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES/COMPETENCIES

  • Utilizes safe work practices and promote safety policies to others. Must maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Proficient in standards, codes, best practices, safe work policies and practices.
  • Responsible for safe and conscientious use of equipment including forklift, skidsteer loader, scissor lifts, power tools along with proficiency in safe methods of hoisting and rigging at all times.
  • Assist with mechanical equipment inspections, troubleshooting, repairing and preventative maintenance along with installations, dismantling, assembling as per manufacturer specifications and recommended standards.  Perform welding duties as required, fabrication and field fit/repairs of equipment.
  • Proficient in material take offs, interpreting equipment and fabrication drawings, including providing accurate layout of the work and building to drawings and specifications. In addition, O+M Manuals to ensure correct maintenance and service has been provided.
  • Accurately and effectively uses various types of welding and cutting equipment.
  • Ability to complete required daily paperwork with legible penmanship and to KPIC standard.
  • Responsible for all company tools ensuring they are accounted for at the end of each day. Maintaining a clean tool trailer each and every day.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrates honesty and integrity in all business interactions and strives to meet customer needs in a creative and safe manner.
  • Highly motivated, positive attitude, pleasant demeanor with an ability to handle multiple time-sensitive tasks while working within a team environment and cross-functional departments as well as independently.
  • Have valid CWB certification, experience with GMAW/MIG).
  • Mechanical ability and knowledge such as troubleshooting skills, ability to assemble and commission mechanical systems in addition to understanding of multi hp industrial drives, shafts, bearings, and lubrication considered an asset.
  • Ability to install, examine, diagnose, and adjust various types of industrial and mechanical equipment is an asset
  • Appropriate level of experience in industrial maintenance/service environment.  Agricultural Industry experience considered an asset.
  • Enrolled in Apprenticeship program.  Journeyman status is an asset.
  • Ability to work in cold & hot weather/environments and green/brown fields sites subject to grain dust.
  • Required Safety tickets/training, minimally including a current First Aid Certificate, fall arrest, confined space, WHIMIS, CSTS will be considered an asset and preference will be shown towards candidate holding valid & current training.  Proof of training maybe requested.
  • Holds no previous safety violation within the FWS Group of Companies.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned 

 

OTHER INFORMATION

  • Valid class 5 driver’s license required with driver’s abstract.
  • Candidate must be open and flexible to change, work during scheduled shutdowns, shift and, when necessary, overtime hours to accommodate scheduled maintenance of equipment.

Main Purpose and Function
Performs routine to skilled maintenance and cleaning of ice rinks, dressing rooms, refrigeration plants and surrounding facilities, assists in janitorial and preventative maintenance duties, performs related duties required or assigned.  Is actively responsible for a variety of functions and activities related to the preventive maintenance and repairs of ice rink surface using the ice resurfacing machine and performs routine janitorial job functions.  Work is performed as assigned or on a rotating shift basis.

 

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Operates services and maintains ice rink surfaces and refrigeration plants and related equipment
  • Scrapes, floods and paints lines, maintains ice surface in proper and safe conditions using the ice resurface, edging equipment and hosing methods
  • Changes and adjusts blade on ice resurfacing machine, inspection checks and records operating hours, machine and battery conditions 
  • Cleans, inspects and makes minor repairs on the rink board system
  • Inspects and assists in rink glass replacement process
  • Maintains rink dressing room cleanliness, inspects condition and records/reports to supervisor
  • Keeps ice rink and facility areas, walkways and equipment clean, serviced and safe
  • Maintains  daily records pertaining to the ice rink refrigeration operation and overall building

  • Connects, assists access for trades and contractors in completing building maintenance and service  
  • Reviews and monitors refrigeration plant maintenance activities to ensure compliance with BCSA – BC Safety Authority and Regulations 
  • Assists in reporting and preventing facility vandalism
  • Performs basic preventive maintenance and lubrication on pumps, motors and related equipment
  • Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and liability and ensuring safety at work site
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of work
  • Performs routine janitorial job functions and responsibilities

Minimum Position Requirements

Required Training, Certifications and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 10; preferable supplemented by technical training related to the work plus some related experience; completion of a recognized program in building service work OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.  
  • Ice Facility Operator or Refrigeration Operator (5th class refrigeration) Certificate from the BC Safety Authority.
  • Valid driver’s license required – Drivers abstract

The successful applicants will be integral members of a highly skilled team of mechanical technicians performing technical troubleshooting, scheduled preventative maintenance and non-scheduled maintenance. VFRS has a diverse fleet of fire fighting apparatus including Engines, Ladders, Heavy Rescues, Aerial Platforms, Fireboats and Medical Units. VFRS’ fleet also consists of Specialty apparatus for Technical Rescue, Hazardous Materials, Command, Fire Investigations and other support and administration vehicles. Fleet & Equipment Services is responsible for yearly commercial vehicle inspections, pump testing, non-destructive aerial testing and small equipment preventative maintenance. The successful applicants will perform repairs in all fields including electrical diagnostics, engine and transmission computer controls, hydraulics and foam injection systems.

 

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services EVT Mechanics work a four on four off schedule with a rotating on-call schedule to provide support for overnight mechanical breakdowns and respond to major incidents in the City of Vancouver. In recent years, VFRS mechanics have also responded alongside VFRS suppression fire fighters to the devastating wildfires throughout British Columbia.


REQUIREMENTS
• Inter-Provincial Certificate of Qualification as a Commercial Transport Mechanic OR
  Inter-Provincial Certificate of Qualification as a Heavy Duty Mechanic
• CVSE Commercial Vehicle Inspectors Certification
• British Columbia Class 3 Driver’s license with Air Brake endorsement

JOB SUMMARY

 

Utilizes advanced building maintenance skills to perform simple to complex preventive maintenance and corrective repair of HVAC and commercial refrigeration equipment, building automation systems and heating and cooling equipment. While supporting assigned reactive and preventive maintenance service calls, monitors building system operations and performance. Interacts directly with store management. Utilizes several trade skills associated HVAC and refrigeration skills such as electrical, plumbing, and gas piping

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Complies with all applicable codes, regulations, governmental agency and Company directives related to building operations and work safety

 

Performs assigned day-to-day repairs, emergency, and preventive maintenance. Completes maintenance and repairs records as required

 

Reviews assigned work orders. Estimates time and materials needed to complete repair. Orders necessary materials and supplies to complete all tasks and maintain good inventory of parts in service vehicle. Utilizes CBRE or clients CMMS to manage work orders and track work order completion

 

Responsible for operation and maintenance of building mechanical and commercial refrigeration systems

 

Responsible for the preventative maintenance and corrective repair of HVAC roof top units (RTU’s), air handling units (AHUs), compressor racks, dehumidification units, heating, and cooling system chiller, and cooling tower) and refrigeration equipment such as walk-in / reach in coolers, and open / closed freezers and bunkers.

 

Inspects building systems including electrical system, HVAC/R, and refrigerant monitoring  system to ensure operation of equipment is within design capabilities and achieves environmental conditions prescribed by client.

 

Monitors and coordinates the work performed by outside third-party contractors.

 

Operates company vehicle in a safe manner and follows prescribed routines to service locations in a timely and safe manner.

 

Monitor  and maintain an energy management program to ensure measures are taken to operate all systems in the most efficient manner to keep  operating costs at a minimum.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic - the individual must posses a journeyperson certificate in good standing recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (trade license) or Individuals holding a recognized trade credential from another Canadian province or territory (Red Seal Endorsements)

 

Proof of HVAC license required.

 

Gasfitter - Class B certificate preferred but not required.

 

ODS HRAI Certification preferred but not required.
 

Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record with periodic checks

 

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

 

Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to respond to common inquiries or escalations  from clients, co-workers, and/or supervisor. Ability to effectively present information to an internal department and/or large groups of employees.
