Job Details

Reporting to the Director of Mechanical Prototype Engineering, based out of LA, the candidate will be highly hands on and be a go-to Engineer for Mechanical solutions and development. The candidate will work closely with Industrial Designers, Product Development Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers and Model Makers and Model Shops to help transform exciting conceptual ideation and requirements of play pattern into functional, manufacturable assemblies and components, adhering to DFMA principles when needed or quick proof of concept/magic when needed.

How will you create impact?
 

  • Provide hands-on technical innovation and leadership in mechanical and material engineering expertise throughout new product development stages for mid-level complexity and high-impact projects.
  • Work effectively within a small team of Mechanical, Electrical, and prototype Engineers and a larger global team of manufacturing engineers and industrial designers, and subject matter experts.
  • Work closely with both in-house and external model shops for proof-of-concept and mechanism development and build.
  • Develop fascinating consumer products in collaboration with a larger global team of highly creative designers, producers, and Engineers as well as other cross-functional teams.
  • Participate in product brainstorming and help verify, confirm, and/or correct desired concepts, directions of projects in an impactful way.
  • Drive productivity and schedule gains by implementing early design successes and decisions for reduced revisions and debug time.



What are your skills and experience?
 

  • Mechanical Engineering experience
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing methods and techniques, including injection molding, CNC machining, fastening methods, bonding, assembly, foam, deco operations…etc.
  • Ability to design functional small Plastic Injection molding parts and assemblies.  Understanding of Tool Die methods.
  • Highly skilled in SOLIDWORKS and/or CREO/Pro-Engineer.   Freeform experience and Rhino3D experience is an asset.
  • Solid understanding of rapid prototyping methods and 3D printing.
  • Ability to start from design illustrations/specifications/briefs along with 2D isometric views to create 3D proof-of-concept CAD assembly drawings.
  • Experience working with creative professionals (industrial designers and artist) both within and outside the company.
  • Ability to travel internationally and within North America if necessary

Main Purpose and Function

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completes cost effective storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure design for construction by City or private crews 
  • Provides project management of sewer and multi-disciplinary (sewer, water, streets) capital projects 
  • Performs field reviews on  sewer assets to ensure compliance with sewer standards
  • Reviews designs and/or tender documents for storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure capital designs 
  • Schedules sewer capital projects in consultation with Sewer Operations staff
  • Reviews CCTV inspection reports of sewer infrastructure 
  • Prepares letters and media information related to sewer construction works
  • Completes post construction evaluation of project closing task
  • Investigates storm events and flooding locations and liaises with Sewer Operations, Risk Management and the public 
  • Completes rezoning and development application reviews for sewer infrastructure requirements
  • Provides direction to sewer staff for separating private property plumbing system and correcting improper plumbing connections
  • Communicates and liaises with outside agencies, public, internal branches to discuss sewer system operation 
  • Other duties/responsibility as assigned

 

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with an Engineer-In-Training or Professional Engineer designation and minimum 0-2 years of related experience in municipal civil infrastructure design, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience (new graduates and EITs are encouraged to apply)
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as an Engineer-In-Training or a Professional Engineer in British Columbia

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and application of engineering principles related to hydraulics, hydrology and rainwater management 
  • Knowledge of Organizational Quality Management processes and frameworks
  • Strong interpersonal, written communication and organizational skills, including excellent written and verbal communication and report writing

The City of Edmonton's Climate Strategy & Planning Unit is looking for an Environmental Engineer who is passionate about adapting our city to the impacts of climate change and leadership in climate solutions. The successful individual will manage and support projects, initiatives and programs that directly support goals and actions contained in the City’s Climate Adaptation Strategy. The successful individual will help in developing the City’s climate resilience standards, regulations and performance criteria and assist with internal and external stakeholder engagement. The individual will also undertake and synthesize research to support project teams in understanding changing climate risks and related adaptation needs. The Environmental Engineer position is significant as the individual will be a Subject Matter Expert who provides technical advice for adapting to climate change impacts.

  • Support the development and implementation of strategies and projects aimed at achieving goals and objectives contained in the City's Climate Adaptation Strategy
  • Provide technical expertise on corporate energy transition, environmental and resiliency projects
  • Develop and evaluate Requests for Proposals (RFP) from consultants and manage consulting projects
  • Participate in and evaluate engineering and technical studies and makes recommendations based on professional judgement (e.g., Climate change vulnerability and risk assessment, climate resilient design criteria)

  • Draft and authenticate technical engineering documents and reports as per APEGA guidance

  • Analysis of climate and environmental initiatives and programs in other municipalities and organizations to identify 'best practices' that could be applicable to Edmonton
  • Serve as a technical resource on resiliency and climate change adaptation to support City policy positions to other areas of the Corporation, internal committees, working teams and City Council
  • Prepare technical memos, policy briefs, presentations, and feedback on climate reports
  • Monitor, measure and report corporate and community environmental and resiliency performance

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental or Civil Engineering, or related Engineering field
  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment.
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant and technical engineering experience in at least one of the following areas:
    • Climate adaptation (including expertise in climate risk/vulnerability assessments and other tools, and integrating adaptation initiatives)
    • Climate mitigation (including renewable energy and greenhouse gas assessment and policy tools)
  • Training in climate change would be considered an asset
  • Strong quantitative analytical skills and the ability to analyze, explain and evaluate highly complex technical information and policy issues, 
  • Knowledge of climate change mitigation, adaptation and environmental risk assessment processes
  • Logical approach to solving problems based on information from multiple perspectives
  • Must be able to prioritize and carry out multiple tasks under tight deadlines

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:
 
Reporting to the Director, Building Design & Construction, the Manager of Building Design & Construction is responsible for managing a multidisciplinary team of staff and external contractors, resolving specific operational and project issues and contributing to the establishment of Divisional policies and procedures.
 
  1. Project Management. Responsible for management of all aspects of building construction from start to finish including renovations and accommodations planning. This includes overseeing and managing a team of professionals that delivers high quality, timely and cost effective services and solutions to operating units that may require a wide range of planning and capital construction services. Including but not limited to: client consultation; cost benefit analysis; feasibility studies; technical review; budget estimates including hard and soft cost budget estimates, a schedule. Identify all risks associated with the project and assign contingencies to manage the risks as well as understand the implications and establishment of priorities with recommendations  in the context of the City’s multi-year capital plans, the Corporate strategic plan, the funding requirements and funding limitations;  forecast, develop, and implement short and long term financial budgets related to facilities requirements; procurement assistance; implementation and post construction reviews and warranty issues. Applies technical knowledge of all legislation when advising staff and monitors the team’s portfolio of projects to minimize the risk of project schedule slippage and over budget scope creep. Monitors work assigned to team. Develop a risk management and action plan, monitors the risks, takes the appropriate action to proactively minimize the potential impact and communicate the actions taken.
  2. Leadership.  Determines staff resource requirements, financial and operational plans. Manages a multi-discipline team comprising of union, non union, management staff, permanent, contract and part time. Responsible for all related labour relation issues including recruitment, hiring, training, performance appraisal, professional development and discipline up to and including dismissal to ensure skilled and competent resources. Continually evaluates the operation and service plan to ensure appropriate allocation of resources and makes recommendations for improvement. Mentors and leads team on how to effectively and efficiently manage external design firms and contractors contracted to specific projects. Provides assistance with negotiating to ensure agreement on contentious issues.  Assess staff development needs.   
  3. Financial accountability.   Prepares, monitors and reconciles  current budgets, and the capital project budgets as required. Ensures that projects are regularly and accurately updated on cost control financial tracker.  Ensures budget control is in place for all projects and monitors during all phases. Ensures all projects are completed on time and on budget. Oversees the preparation of all policies and procedures e.g. tender documents, council reports etc. 
  4. Reporting. Develops and implements project control systems, cost evaluation methodologies, performance evaluation criteria for consultant selection in accordance with approved Corporate policies and guidelines. Prepares reports for Council and various Committees. Oversees the preparation of documents to award and amend purchase orders and contracts. Ensures status of all projects is communicated according to project methodology and City protocol. Attends meetings to present report as required e.g. Council, and various Committees. Creates and implements a communication strategy to keep stakeholders informed. Attends public meetings to make presentations and respond to queries about construction projects. Ensures closeout documents are acceptable.
  5. Consultative Advisor. Oversees the preparation of specifications for new work and service contracts. Develops strategic policies and programs to meet the long-term needs of the City's capital implementation requirements. Takes a lead role in the implementation of vendors of record for the section and administer these contracts. Develops policies and guidelines for all operations pertaining to the section. Analyses and recommends acceptance of consultant and construction contracts. Provides direction to consultants of all disciplines. Negotiates and coordinates ongoing relationships. Ensures construction contracts and drawing specifications are properly executed. Works collaboratively with stakeholders, committees and various advisory groups.
 
SELECTION CRITERIA: 
 
EDUCATION:
  • University Degree in Engineering or Architecture or Construction Management or Interior Design or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the application of the principles and practices of facility operations and construction. 
  • Professional designation and membership in CIP, OAA or PEO or ARIDO, or PIP or PMI preferred
 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • 5 years’ experience managing professional staff, consultants, construction firms, general contractors, leading project teams, project development, state of good repair, renovation and multi-phased major building projects, preferably in the public sector. Particular training or experience in facilities planning/management codes and legislation, construction-related practices or the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a large, multidisciplinary team of unionized, technical and professional staff both in-house and contract. 
  • Extensive experience in the direct management of a facility-planning and delivery portfolio for multiple client groups. 
  • Extensive working knowledge of building planning and design principles, concepts and procedures; the concepts of universal and alternative office planning principles; types and costs of office amenities; heating ventilating and air conditioning systems; building codes and fire codes; security systems, accessibility issues and other legislation including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Lien Act, CCDC and OAA contract documents, etc. 
 
OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, coach and coordinate related activities of staff and contracted professionals. 
  • Proven experience with directing multiple teams for the relocation and accommodation of multiple clients. 
  • Computer proficiency and experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project) and software applicable to construction projects.
  • Knowledge and application of project management methodology, construction techniques and materials
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills to deal effectively with staff, political representatives, consultants, contractors and the public.
  • Any of the following: Membership in the Professional Engineers of Ontario or the Ontario Association of Architects, or Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License Class “G”, and the use of a personal vehicle for site visits.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment as required to visit job sites.

Qualifications

•    Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan.
•    Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
•    Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.

The Shift Engineer has the direct accountability for ensuring the maintenance of facility boilers, refrigeration systems and HVAC units.  They will oversee the maintenance and operations of plants utilities under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor and will provide 8 hour/day shift Engineer coverage for our food processing facility.  Working in a unionized environment, you will be responsible for operating freon refrigeration equipment, boilers, water tests, WWTP, and related auxiliaries while monitoring all water distribution, performing rounds and operating checks on equipment, responding to operations’ requests for services, and following up on alarm and taking action to rectify deficiencies.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

  • Maintain/ Monitor/Test log all steam generating requirements by operation code
  • Maintain/Monitor/Check all refrigeration equipment requirements to Technical Standards and Safety Authority (T.S.S.A.) Standards
  • Participate in plant equipment repairs and installations
  • Interface with necessary Contractual and Inspection Departments for corrective and/or legal requirements
  • Carry out oral/printed/electronic work requests and apply corrective measures in a timely fashion utilizing computerized maintenance system
  • Maintain accurate records of safe management, operations and maintenance through compliance
  • Improve plant efficiency by reporting on operating conditions of equipment, determine operating window, and helping to develop and maintain a maintenance program
  • Troubleshoot any mechanical breakdown relating to the Utilities Department to ensure minimal loss in manufacturing of our products
  • Work together with all other departments to ensure a productive team environment and the continuous improvement of the plant processes
  • Understand all operating procedures of our facilities processing equipment and is able to maintain it
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment by ensuring plant and powerhouse are operating in accordance with T.S.S.A. Standards
  • Ensure all work performed complies with governing practices, codes and regulations
  • Will do full rounds, 3 times daily minimum
  • Independent running the whole powerhouse and evaporators
  • Other duties as assigned

What You’ll Bring:

  • You have a 4th Class Stationary Engineer license or Refrigeration B and three to five years experience in a shift/operating role
  • Experience with freon refrigeration, would be an asset
  • Must be able to work 8 hours shifts, Monday-Friday days and overtime required
  • Preference will be given to applicants holding Refrigeration B Operator License

Rail Operations manages the delivery of diesel and electric rail services, including management of the thirty-year P3 contract with the Rideau Transit Maintenance Group for the rail maintenance contract for the LRT system, ensuring safe and reliable operations that meet service standards, comply with all regulatory safety and operating requirements, and provide a safe, reliable, efficient, effective, on time, courteous and cost-effective rail service to a growing and diverse City of Ottawa.
 

You are responsible to monitor, measure, audit and review the performance of the rail systems, civil infrastructure, track, and supporting infrastructure on OC Transpo’s rail networks. You manage the production of quality metrics to measure the soundness of the performance, asset conditions, and compliance with system engineering processes; provide a single point of contact for all technical issues and concerns; track, trend, and analyse reliability in relation to track availability, including reliability issues for all infrastructure assets; oversee and provide direction and comments to system expansions; complete technical analysis of rail system failure modes; and lead rail capital improvement projects.
 

In addition, you provide technical support and design input during the procurement specification(s) as required, including the tender phase for upgrades and new installations; are responsible for the technical review of design submissions and responses; assist with the tracking and monitoring of track and track related quality issues during any  procurement stage or during maintenance phases; assist with investigations in relation to systems operations and track infrastructure issues; complete root cause analyses for system or sub-system failures/issues; undertake technical report writing; manage the development and delivery of rail and infrastructure lifecycle & safety programs; plus provide support to Transit Operations during major operational events.
 

You also participate on technical committees and lead project teams including provide engineering expertise to discuss and resolve issues on projects internal and external to the department which may impact or affect the operational requirements of the Transportation Services Department.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


Completion of 4 year university degree in Applied Science or Engineering in Civil, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering
 

Minimum of 7 years of experience in railway or mass transit sectors relating to track infrastructure engineering, maintenance and operation, testing and commissioning, overhaul planning, life cycle planning, and reliability improvement programs for new and existing rail systems with experience in transit and rail control/power control systems, railway related integrated control system and track system engineering and system integration

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)

KNOWLEDGE

  • A working knowledge of passenger railroad / transit operations railway industry procedures and practices with a focus on urban transit systems and track infrastructure. 
  • A railway specific discipline in track, track bed, civil and structures, power, signaling, telecommunications
  • Development lifecycle and lifecycle products in relation to track infrastructure
  • Systems architecture/interface modeling
  • Behavioural/operational concept/RAMS modeling
  • Life cost modeling
  • Risk assessment (both technical and project)
  • Project management techniques and practices associated with the planning, documentation and monitoring of systems engineering activities
  • Systems engineering and technical assurance
  • RAMS analysis including use of application software
  • Engineering Safety Management
  • Risk identification analysis and mitigation
  • Rail operations and planning, assurance, systems engineering, RAMS, Engineering Safety Management, procurement and transaction advice, and development and feasibility studies
  • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers 
  • Conversant with railway design safety principles HSE/HMRI, railway safety standards –
  • Familiar with AREMA standards, Transport Canada standards and mass transit APTA  
  • Be conversant with the requirements of EN 50216 RAMS Railway Applications including MIL standards as applicable
  • Knowledge of rail systems including vehicle, signals, communications, electrification, building systems, and operations is an asset
