Job Details

You will provide technical and engineering support for Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) equipment changes and upgrades as well as E&I discipline expertise in support of critical equipment troubleshooting, equipment strategy reviews and E&I system changes through the Management of Change (MOC) process.

 

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical or instrumentation/controls engineering
  • Must be a Professional Engineer in the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGA) 
  • Atleast 5 years of experience in maintenance/reliability engineering
  • Ability to clearly define complex multivariable problems and take ownership 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare engineering design packages for Electrical or Instrumentation Systems modifications in accordance with company technical standards to improve plant reliability, availability and mitigate risks with equipment obsolescence
  • Lead and/or participate in investigation of incidents, producing reports and coordinating investigation related activities with other disciplines
  • Support operation, maintenance and outage teams with electrical or instrumentation related activities
  • Support teams with equipment strategy reviews to ensure common failure modes, area specific learnings and maintenance mitigations have been incorporated
  • Apply and interpret key industry codes and standards relevant to both electrical and instrumentation

 

Location and other Key Details:

  • You will work out of our Syncrude Aurora site in Fort McMurray
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday

Job Details

We are looking for a junior Electrical Engineer/Engineer in Training to join our Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) Reliability Team in Fort McMurray. In this position you will utilize your sound technical skills to provide technical support to operations, maintenance and shutdown organizations, and prepare high quality design packages, as required.

 

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientist of Alberta (APEGA)

  • Two to five years of experience in E&I maintenance/reliability engineering within the industry /operating plant

  • Knowledge of design, maintenance, testing and commissioning of E&I equipment

  • Experience with management of change (MOC) process and workflow

  • Experienced in the application/selection and installation of field instruments and valves

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Review shift logs daily for E&I equipment issues in the Production Unit (PU)

  • Provide technical support for operations and maintenance during troubleshooting and incident investigations

  • Participate in PU meetings and assist with field visits

  • Interface with regulatory agencies

  • Review equipment test results and advise on maintenance, repairs, or upgrades

  • Participate in risk analysis and develop engineering solutions for plant issues

  • Develop and modify scopes of work for turnaround/outage events and support execution

  • Recommend and procure materials, equipment, and services

  • Complete E&I engineering work packages for equipment reliability improvements, ensuring compliance with standards

  • Prepare high-quality design packages and detailed specifications

  • Check vendor drawings for compliance

  • Analyze equipment data to develop end-of-life strategies and failure reports

 

Location and other Key Details: 

  • You will work out of Syncrude Mildred Lake in Fort McMurray, Alberta

  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs

  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Three to five years related engineering experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering

  • Must be a Professional Engineer or eligible for membership with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)

  • Background in static equipment inspection, maintenance and design and have an extensive knowledge of commonly used design and fabrication codes as well as post construction specifications for pressure vessels, furnaces, heat exchangers and process and slurry piping

  • Experience using mechanical design tools for static equipment (such as PV Elite, CAESAR II stress analysis, SagePlus, CodeCalc ) to support design verification and Fitness for Service (FFS) assessment

  • Knowledge of materials engineering and risk-based work selection process considered assets  

  • Support execution of equipment strategy work

  • A valid driver's licence

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide general mechanical engineering support relating to static equipment fitness for service (FFS) assessment, repair specifications, re-rate assessment, failure investigation, purchase specification, equipment strategies support etc. to site operating units

  • Produce engineering packages with varying scope and complexity such as:

    • Repair packages (both emergency/routine maintenance, outage, and turnaround)

    • Upgrade packages following Management of Change (MOC) process, risk assessment / peer review, preparation of engineering drawings/sketches, updating data sheets, etc.

    • Purchase specifications for new and replacement pressure equipment.

    • Support fitness for service assessments such as minimum thickness calculations, re-rates, material alterations, fire damage assessment etc.

  • Support shutdown scope development

  • Work collaboratively with process, maintenance and technical personnel to resolve plant and system issues

  • Conduct root cause failure analysis for static equipment

  • This position is located at Suncor Base plant location in Fort McMurray, Alberta

We’re hiring a Mechanical Engineer to be part of a dynamic Maintenance Engineering team. We are particularly interested on a Mechanical Engineer that comes from the Mine Industry with experience on Fixed Plant equipment i.e. Crushers, Conveyors, Hoppers, Screens, Slurry Pumps, etc. If you are passionate about continuous improvement, root cause failure analysis, and one-time cost-effective repairs, this is the job for you!

This role gives you the opportunity to be at the forefront of our Extraction and Tailings operations, where you will have an immediate impact on the business. You will be directly interfacing with Operations and Maintenance teams to mitigate threats impacting reliability.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering discipline, or equivalent
  • Professional Engineering designation or eligible for registration with APEGA
  • Four years of field experience in an operating facility troubleshooting equipment problems and providing short and long term solutions to increase the reliability and availability of the equipment
  • Experience in Root Cause Failure Analysis and Reliability metrics
  • Experience with hydraulic systems is considered an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs
  • Experience with SAP / S4 and Fieldglass is considered an asset
  • Lean Six Sigma certification is considered an asset
  • Client service oriented, ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team as required, and Analytical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication and excellent organizational and time management skills

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as the primary contact between the Production Unit and the Rotating Engineering team, ensuring clear communication and coordination
  • Participate in daily and weekly Production Unit meetings to support equipment availability and decision-making
  • Provide updates and reports to stakeholders on the status of tasks, progress, and any potential concerns or deviations from the plan
  • Issue scope of work and inspection recommendations for Outage and routine maintenance activities
  • Issue reliability metrics reports for different equipment classes
  • Monitor equipment health, troubleshoot performance and failures, and complete root cause analysis
  • Complete equipment wear analysis
  • Apply a continuous improvement mindset to increase equipment reliability and decrease operating cost
