Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs assigned skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the installation, operation and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment and repairs required in connection with general building maintenance
  • Operates a computerized Building Automation System (BAS) to manage/control Building Systems
  • Performs general maintenance work in connection with mechanical and electrical equipment, building services and facilities
  • Maintains a preventative maintenance program and records

Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Must have completed secondary school and possess a technician qualification in a building trade or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Experience in the maintenance and operation of large computerized commercial buildings.
  3. Experience in air distribution systems as related to modern air conditioning systems.
  4. Experience in the maintenance of pumps and large air handling equipment.
  5. Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements.

 

You must also have:

  • Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heating boilers, chemical treatment of chilled and hot water systems, building electrical systems, UPS power systems, fire safety equipment and fire suppression systems.
  • Knowledge of automatic heating and cooling controls including pneumatic systems.
  • An ability to read blueprints.
  • An ability to read and perform tasks outlined in technical manuals and publications.
  • An ability to maintain effective working relations with other staff.
  • An ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • The ability to work all shifts for a 24/7 building operation.

This position is responsible for performing highly skilled journeyperson mechanic duties in the Transit Fleet Maintenance Branch.  This position reports to the Supervisor of Maintenance and Equipment. 
 

Note: May be required to work varying day, evening and weekend shifts. Evening shifts are subject to a $1.00/Hour shift differential and Sunday shall be paid at the rate of time and a quarter.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and overhauls bus engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, suspension, steering, HVAC and all auxiliary equipment, including electrical components.
  • Assists in determining and ordering parts and materials necessary for repair of equipment.
  • Diagnoses mechanical and electrical defects.
  • Performs Highway Traffic Board safety inspections and related repairs.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, tools and equipment used in the overhauling, repair and maintenance of heavy duty and automotive equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings and manuals.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports related to all work performed.
  • Ability to maintain co-operative and harmonious working relations with other employees.
  • Demonstrated skill in diagnosing mechanical defects on a variety of equipment.

Education & Experience

Typically, the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are obtained through completion of a Journeyperson Certificate in Truck and Transport Trade, Heavy Duty Mechanics, Agriculture Machinery Technician or Automotive Service Technician, combined with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in truck and transport mechanical repair including training and experience in the heavy-duty automatic transmission and automotive electrical fields. Training and experience in Allison Automatic and ZF Transmissions, Automotive Electrical systems, and Cummins diesel engines is preferred.

Working/Other Conditions

Must have or be able to obtain a Class 5A License.

Job Details

The Electrician position, under limited direction, installs, maintains, test, troubleshoots and repairs industrial electrical equipment and associated electrical and electronic controls. Primarily accountable for interpreting architectural drawings and electrical code specifications and form and test electrical circuits to ensure health and safety regulations. In addition, assure proper functioning and illumination of electrical equipment and work on equipment such as electrical transmission lines, motors, generators, distribution and plant equipment.

Performance Expectations

  • Oversee required inspections of electrical systems to ensure compliance with Ontario Electrical Standards Act.
  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics and electrical code specifications to determine layout of industrial electrical equipment installations.
  • Install, examine, replace or repair electrical wiring, receptacles, switch boxes, conduits, feeders, fiber-optic and coaxial cable assemblies, lighting fixtures and other electrical components as needed. 
  • Install and startup new equipment.
  • Test electrical and electronic equipment and components for continuity, current, voltage and resistance.
  • Update and log electrical changes.
  • Maintain needed spares and purchase material in the most cost effective manner.
  • Evaluate power required for new equipment and connect to the Ontario Electrical Code.
  • Complete interface to CNC equipment.
  • Coordinate with all plant services and contractors as required.
  • Train and direct electrical employees and ensure they perform to required standards

Credentials

  • Technical school training and has completed the apprenticeship program.
  • Licensed electrician (309A or 442A).
  • Minimum two years of previous related experience, automation troubleshooting experience, working knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics
  • Able to read schematic drawings in order to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
  • Able to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics and electrical code specifications.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and determine resolutions when encountering malfunctions in equipment.
  • Knowledge of phone systems, network cabling, security systems, door access systems and video surveillance systems is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics, servomotors and controllers

 

Desired Characteristics

  • Ability to work independently, in addition, work as part of a team that includes other tradespeople and professionals to install, repair and maintain electrical systems and equipment.
  • Organized and able to work with minimum supervision
  • Occasionally moves equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
