Environmental Health and Safety Specialist Full-time Job

Performance Expectations
- Conduct health and safety audits; both compliance and program based.

- Ensure health and safety orientation/job-specific training for all new employees, transferred employees and/or promoted employees are conducted.
- Review the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and update and implement procedures and practices, and ensure training is conducted promptly.
- Review safety statistics, conduct trend analysis and make recommendations for continual improvements.
- Review illnesses and injuries both occupational and non-occupational with the health nurse and the company physician to ensure lost time is minimized.
- Review the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) claims to make recommendations to minimize the time of work and maximize the safe return to work program. No direct involvement
- Conduct required workplace inspections, and facility audits and provide a corrective/prevention action plan complete with responsibilities and timelines.
- Perform other duties/projects as assigned.
Credentials
- A minimum of 5-7 years of related experience.
- Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific or engineering field or equivalent.
- Completion of Canadian Registered Safety Professional (C.R.S.P.) designation or actively working towards the designation.
Desired Characteristics.
- Ability to communicate with external and internal stakeholders. For example, communicate with members of the medical community to gain insight into evolving ways to modify work environments to meet the needs of disabled employees. Use this information to analyze programs in effect in the workplace and provide input to policy development regarding the accommodation of disabled employees' needs.
- Extensive knowledge and application of environmental health and safety legislation and industry standards. Ability to review a variety of sources such as legislation on health and safety standards to become informed of the scope of employee relations cases.
- Develop cost-benefit analyses for a wide range of programs, such as health and safety training programs, to present the company with significant input to long-range human resource planning.
- Ability to work independently to conduct research and develop policy papers and reports. Work as a team member in both internal and external working groups. Work with industry-wide professional organizations, boards and colleagues both inside and outside of their organization.
- Experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 is an asset.
- Undertake continuous learning through courses, such as community college and university courses, through on-the-job initiatives and highly developed networking and professional liaison. Attend conferences and seminars and read professional journals to learn about best practices and emerging trends in health and safety as needed.

The Donor Centre team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services collecting donor blood in a safe manner to enable safe products which save lives every day. In this role, you will assist in the collection of blood and blood products ensuring adherence to all safety protocols and all required documentation is carried out. You will play an integral part in building and promoting a positive donor experience and encouraging donations.
Formula for success
- Leveraging your ability to communicate effectively with donors, you will conduct registration and confidential screening to determine eligibility and build and promote a positive donor experience.
- Utilizing your superb people skills, you will provide donors with information, instruction, and advice on blood donation.
- Drawing on your knowledge and experience you will provide coaching and consultation to donor centre staff, acting as team lead for collection events as needed.
- With your excellent interpersonal skills, you will work in a diverse team environment assisting in the collection of whole blood and/or apheresis blood components which save lives daily.
- At mobile events within our communities, you will assist in setting up booths, tables, and other equipment to ensure donor clinics are properly set up for use.
Desired education and skills
- Completion of accredited nursing program and current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the province is required.
- Two years of experience working as a nurse is considered an asset as is a certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Previous experience as a preceptor or with coaching others is an asset.
- Technical skills including Microsoft Word and Outlook, and the ability to learn new systems and programs.
- A second language is considered an asset to support a positive donor experience.

- Count Narcotics with night registered staff. Shift report at the nursing station. Do initial rounds on the unit.
- Review PSW assignment (Assign fire runner) and participate in fire drills. Participate in fire drills and debrief after fire drills monthly.
- Check the daily planner/ communication book for any resident appointments, any requests or needing follow-up
- Check and document vaccine, specimen, Medication, and water temperature if no RN is present in the unit.
- Distribute iPad and other supplies to PSW, with signage, and upon return Ensure all PSW wear name tags.
- Communicate with PSW and plan if any lab specimens are needed to collect, such as urine specimens.
- From the 1st-7th day of each month, remind PSW to weigh residents during their bath days
- From the 8th-10th of each month, check the weight list to see residents who needs to be re-weighed
- Complete medication administration and treatment administration.
- Check blood sugar and administer insulin as per e-mar. Observe for any adverse reaction and effectiveness.
- Supervise dining room at breakfast and lunch. Assist with feeding. Do not administer medication in the dining room without an order.
- Complete hydration assessment for residents reported to have decrease fluid intake, send dietary referral if necessary
- Attend all care plan meetings and IDTC (Ensure primary PSW attends the IDTC), admission /re-admission, and initiate PSW tasks in POC, Complete medication reconciliation, admission noted and all assessments. Ensure a 24-hour care plan is initiated.
- For any new admission, complete progress notes and vital signs for the first 72 hours. Complete other admission assessments as necessary.
- Verify POC documentation during and at the end of the shift and clear the dashboard alerts after interventions are complete and documented in progress notes.
- During MD days, prepare problem list/update if necessary. Assist MD with rounds
- Process physician orders and quarterly med review that needs follow-up and second signatures.
- Complete weekly skin and wound assessment and treatment.
- Complete the 24hr infection control surveillance sheet for any resident with symptoms of any infectious disease. Ensure PPE and signage are in place and notify family, ICP/DOC, or manager on call.
- Complete 24hr unit report/ census.
- Keep bath and weight schedule updated
- Complete performance appraisals for PSW, Orientate, mentor and train new staff, including PSW, Complete all education online and attend in-services.
- Collecting data for indicators (e.g., infection, restraints etc.)
- Ensure compliance with Extendicare’s policy/procedures/LTCHA legislative, and CNO standards.
- Follow up with families/residents/staff on any arising issues, address any concerns
- Report any resident/family /staff concerns to the RN Supervisor/CC/DOC
- Obtain report from PSW and complete all documentation in PCC
- Re-stock medication and treatment carts for the incoming shift
- Give Shift report (24 hours report must be given during shift report ) with evening staff. Count narcotics with evening staff.
Any other duties as assigned by supervisor or delegate. Ensure compliance with Extendicare’s policy/procedures, LTCHA, OHS legislative, CNO standards and as per job guidelines.
