Edmonton’s Fire Prevention area investigates complaints, conducts inspections, engages with the community, issues permits, and implements safety programs to mitigate and manage risks to the community.

Fire Prevention Officers are expected to interpret and apply codes, standards and bylaws in an appropriate and consistent manner that meets the intent and objective of each body of legislation. Officers will be expected to have a level of understanding necessary to provide advice on challenging code matters, while ensuring their daily actions promote Edmonton Fire Rescue Services strategic priorities. .

  • Conduct inspections of buildings, structures and places in an assigned area to identify and locate fire hazards and ensuring compliance with the Safety Codes Act, the National Fire Code - Alberta Edition and related standards and City Bylaws
  • Confirm building fire alarm systems, fire pumps, standpipe systems, sprinkler systems, emergency power generator systems, smoke control systems, elevator control systems are functional
  • Communicate and educate property owners, tenants, managers etc. on safety requirements relevant to their living situation
  • Review and interpret technical reports; examine building plans; review building development plans; research the fire behavior of materials and substances
  • Conduct seminars and deliver presentations within the context of Community Safety
  • Review construction site and fire safety plans
  • Review alternative code solutions
  • Issue corrective action reports, corrective letters, provincial orders and initiate legal action under the Safety Codes Act, or Municipal or Government Act
  • Participate in safety promotions throughout the community and partnerships with the private sector 
  • Create and present public safety education and awareness programs
  • Project work assigned by supervisory staff 
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Operator’s Licence is required
  • Must have an entry level designation as a Fire Safety Codes Officer (Group A as prescribed by the Safety Codes Council) and a minimum one (1) year related experience
  • NFPA 1031 Level 1 is described as an equivalent certification prescribed by the Safety Codes Council
  • Additional content through the Safety Codes Council, specific to Alberta, will be required for full certification in the Province
  • Must obtain a full certification level Fire Safety Codes Officer designation as prescribed by the Safety Codes Council / provincial authority within two (2) years of permanent employment. Fire discipline training includes but not limited to, Group A, Group B Level 1 and 2 
  • Must complete all classes of Fire Safety Codes Officer Inspector designation within four (4) years of permanent employment, including but not limited to Fire SCO Group E designation
    • In lieu of one year related experience, the following qualifications may be considered: 
      Minimum of 2 years experience as a certified Safety Codes Officer in another discipline
      OR 
      Completed Building Construction Technology Diploma (or a related diploma from a recognized institute) or a Journeyman certificate in a related field
      OR 
      Minimum five (5) years in the construction industry or five (5) years experience as a member of a municipal Fire Service
  • Additional information and assets:
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to deliver presentations to stakeholder groups and/or the public
  • Previous experience with software and hardware related to the scope of work will be considered an asset. Examples are, but not limited to:
    • Google Suite, Google Chrome, database input and management, general laptop / smartphone use and cloud based software
  • Able to effectively problem solve, deal with difficult and potentially contentious situations effectively; excellent decision-making skills needed 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and the community 
  • Certified FSCO B1 or B2 is considered an asset
  • Certified NFPA 1031 level II is considered an asset and is prescribed as an equivalent to the B2 certification by the Safety Codes Council

Waste Leader Full-time Job

Job Details

The Waste Services Branch is currently looking for a Waste Leader. This position is at the heart of the plant’s operations, playing a pivotal role in monitoring and controlling the various processes within the IPTF. This role requires a high level of vigilance and technical skill to ensure that all operations are running smoothly and efficiently, and that any issues are swiftly identified and addressed. The operator works closely with Plant Operators and the Plant Supervisor to maintain optimal plant performance.

The position will also be responsible for providing field-level supervision to teams of operators, as well as oversee the deployment of staff, and to collaborate with other Waste Leaders roles on program delivery.   The leader will also be responsible for plant operations utilizing a HMI and field level operations on a daily basis and be familiar with PLC logics.  

What will you be doing? 

  • Participate in and support the planning and development of Sustainable Waste Processing strategies, initiatives and performance measures
  • Implement corporate, branch and section initiatives throughout the areas 
  • Implement consistent standards for customer service and the employee experience
  • Monitor day to day performance of contracted maintenance service to ensure the work is being conducted according to the contract specifications
  • Work in collaboration with Fleet & Facilities to ensure vehicles/equipment and sites are ready and available as required
  • Maintain awareness of the budget and make recommendations to leadership regarding budget costs Identify and ensure the provision of resources (materials, equipment and supplies) required to implement approved work plans; procure require items (day-to-day purchases)

Qualifications

Skills Required for Success:

  • Considerable knowledge of the equipment, procedures, and associated policies and Bylaws related to the City’s Waste Management processes
  • Knowledge and hands on skill in the operation of loaders, excavators, skid steers, backhoes, forklifts etc.
  • Experience with using a HMI to operate a plant, Geoware, SAP plant maintenance and google sheets
  • Knowledge and experience with scada operating systems in a plant environment that includes boilers

Job Summary

Under supervision of the Development Review Manager, this position provides technical and interpretive customer service involving the review and approval of a variety of development permit applications under the provision of The Zoning Bylaw and The Planning and Development Act.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the review of development permit applications, including highly complex development applications such as Direct Control District applications. 
  • Advises applicants verbally and in writing of specific items of non-compliance with the Zoning Bylaw, and negotiates with applicants to achieve bylaw compliance. 
  • Approves and issues development permits accordingly and prepares and issues letters denying applications including the reasons for denial. 
  • Reviews subdivision, rezoning, discretionary use, and condominium applications for compliance with the Zoning Bylaw and other municipal requirements.
  • Responds to complex development related inquiries and provides accurate and consistent zoning interpretations to developers, architects, engineers, designers and the general public.
  • Maintains effective relationships with members of the development industry;
  • Maintains application file systems and records;
  • Compiles and organizes statistical information on development applications and related revenues, and prepares information reports, including recommendations on policy and programs.
  • Provides technical advice in the preparation of Zoning Bylaw amendments.
  • Assists with the preparation of materials in connection with development permit appeals to the Development Appeals Board and the Saskatchewan Municipal Board.
  • Assists with the Legalizing Existing Suites (LES) program.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Requirements

  • Diploma in Planning Technology, Architectural Technology or related discipline with five years' experience in the application and enforcement of Zoning Bylaw regulations OR a Degree in Planning or related discipline and three years' experience in the application and enforcement of Zoning Bylaw regulations.

• Oversees the use of technologically advanced equipment and vehicles in the provision of parking enforcement services, including procurement, maintenance of equipment, troubleshooting, managing contracts with 3rd party vendors, arranging for repair and maintenance including warranty work, and providing staff training and mentoring in the use of equipment.
• Monitors and manages the parking enforcement contract and directs work of these contract staff through the contract Supervisors, to ensure enforcement and document delivery service requirements are met.
• Serves as the City representative in court on a weekly basis to testify as to enforcement practices in the issuance of tickets and verify equipment/stations were working when tickets were issued. This work involves, preparation of evidence packages, research, compiling documentation, and reviewing the enforcement process and evidence (photos etc.) specific to the situation to confirm validity of tickets.
• Prepares disclosure packages in a timely manner at the request of the Solicitors office.
• Provides coverage for other parking staff positions as required including the Customer Service Coordinator, Parking Operations Manager and Policy and Permitting Manager. Acts for the Parking Services Manager on occasion, in their absence.
• Provides advice, technical and training support to staff in other Divisions responsible for managing parking enforcement contracts for civic initiatives such as street sweeping or clearing,
• Oversees all requests for ticket reviews (RTR’s) in conjunction with tickets issued in conjunction parking infractions, including providing training and management support for other staff involved in this review process.
• Represent Parking Services on internal committees and provides expertise on potential parking related matters in consideration of a special events, maintenance projects or other internal initiatives which may impact or draw on parking considerations and identifies appropriate processes and mitigating strategies.
• Performs other related duties as assigned
