The Dock Worker role is critical to customer service and key to ensuring that customer requirements are being met. The Dock Worker / Forklift Operator is responsible for ensuring proper, safe and timely handling of inbound and outbound freight.  The Dock Worker ensures they maintain a clean work environment with a focus on protecting the customer’s freight from damage through proper handling techniques. Key skills to this position are time management, organization and the ability to work autonomously.

 

How You’ll Help: 

  • Moving and handling large and cumbersome freight in a dock environment (50-75 lbs)
  • Operating a Forklift in congested areas
  • Ensuring compliance with TDG, WHMIS, Company policies and/or procedures and customer specific requirements
  • Utilizing proper handling techniques to ensure the customer’s freight is protected from damage 
  • Other related duties as may be required.
  • Ensure all inbound and outbound Freight is accurately and efficiently received and shipped daily in accordance with company procedures.
  • Organize and direct inbound and outbound freight to city and line haul trailers
  • Assisting with administrative duties related to shipments.

Your Skills & Experience: 

  • Minimum of secondary education, with preference of post-secondary education (general stream), or a combination of education and experience.
  • Forklift certified
  • Trained in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • WHMIS certified
  • Previous Transportation or operational experience is preferred, various roles within transportation would be beneficial 
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs

The City of Vancouver supports continued education and development in areas of interest for all of its employees. Equipment Services provides great opportunities for training including dealer training on newly purchased fleet equipment. We are always looking to provide employees with training to develop skills, knowledge, and abilities.

 

There are three positions available (2 Heavy-Duty Mechanic and 1 Commercial Transport Mechanic). The regular work schedule is from 3:10 PM to 12:34 AM, Monday to Friday. The successful candidates may be required to adjust shifts and locations as operationally required.

 

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Heavy Duty Mechanic or Commercial Transport Certificate of Qualifications (T.Q.), Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement
  • Red Seal certification is preferred.
  • Completion of Grade 10, supplemented by technical courses related to the work.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the automotive and heavy-duty mechanical trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of braking systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspects components, checks gauges and monitors fluid levels.
  • Maintains, repairs, and/or replaces filters, pulleys and belts.
  • Replaces gaskets, pumps and bearings.
  • Refits and packs valves.
  • Tests and adds chemicals to systems.
  • Oils, greases and cleans components.
  • Conducts operational tests to ensure optimal equipment performance.
  • Makes set point adjustments to physical plant equipment and related systems.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 and courses in the technical specialty and considerable related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Fourth Class Power Engineer Certificate or equivalent/higher is required
  • Sound related experience in the maintenance of HVAC equipment and of Worksafe BC indoor airquality regulations
  • Class C Gas Fitters License for the Province of B.C is desirable


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of building system components and related installations.
  • Working knowledge of building systems and the provincial regulations governing operations.
  • Ability to operate and adjust equipment and automated control systems (DCC) such as Delta and Reliable controls, make complex repairs and replace components.
  • Ability to develop work plans, adapt work methods and estimate materials.
  • Ability to maintain records and to prepare reports.
  • Skill in the care and use of tools and testing equipment.
  • Good sound judgement and effective interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Office software is preferred.

Qualifications 

Education and Experience:

  • Technical Safety BC Ice Facility Operator Certificate or higher required

  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia required

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of recreation facility maintenance and repair

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules and regulations

  • Working knowledge of ice rink refrigeration systems.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Journeyperson Metal Fabricator will perform a variety of skilled shop and field work at the journeyperson level which includes: welding, fitting, brazing, heating, cutting and laying out tasks while you are repairing and maintaining City equipment, structures and buildings.

 

There is advanced work in tempering, cutting, straightening, bending, shaping and drawing out machinery part and tools. Duties will also include performing skilled welding, heating, cutting and tapping tasks utilizing steel, cast ironand other ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
 

Job functions will be performed in accordance with established trade practices. You may supervise the work of subordinates performing less complex related tasks. Some duties may be more complex and difficult requiring the use of independent judgement in determining methods and procedures in solving unusual problems related to complex fitting, fabrication, welding, layout and design of tasks. Assignments will be both written and verbal, and may be accompanied by sketches or blueprints.
 

The regular work schedule is from 3:10 PM to 12:34 AM, Monday to Friday. The successful candidate may be required to adjust shifts and locations as operationally required.

 

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of grade 10 supplemented by technical courses related to the work with considerable Journeyperson experience.
  • Metal Fabrication Certificate of Qualification (T.Q.), Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement or Certification of Apprenticeship.
  • Red Seal certification is preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the steel fabrication trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the use and care of tools and equipment in finishing and fitting a variety of metal parts and objects in the maintenance, overhaul and repair of construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to weld aluminum cast iron and steel, layout and make patterns.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions which may be accompanied by sketches and diagrams.
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with members of the public, suppliers,and internal clients.
  • Agility, muscular coordination and sufficient strength to permit the performance of heavy manual labour.

 

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
    • 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
    • 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
