PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Performs a variety of cleaning duties within assigned Commission buildings.

JOB DUTIES AND TASKS:

1. Performs cleaning duties within assigned buildings including vacant dwellings:

(a) Mops, washes, waxes and polishes floors and vacuums carpets; cleans carpets (except on move outs), walls, doors, furniture, smoke alarms and dusts and sweeps areas;
(b) Moves Commission and tenant furniture and/or effects within a development;
(c) Maintains cleanliness of assigned outside areas and picks up litter and removes garbage, maintains integrity and compliance of recycling programs;
(d) Clears snow from doorways and walkways and applies ice melt product when required;
(e) Operates cleaning janitorial equipment and uses associated tools and cleaning materials;
(f) Washes windows inside and outside where accessible;
(g) Required to utilize tact and diplomacy and refers tenants to other staff where appropriate. In some occasions may be required to exercise interpersonal and conflict resolution skills when dealing with the resident population.
 

2. Other related duties

(a) Changes light bulbs in buildings and in unlit areas where no Building Manager is assigned or the Building Manager is off duty;
(b) When required, shall drive the Employer's vehicle.

Main Purpose and Function

The Building Worker position performs a full range of cleaning and minor maintenance tasks in, and around, civic buildings, with the goal of keeping buildings clean and maintained in a safe and healthy manner and notifies direct supervisor of the need for any building repairs and maintenance.

This position requires a wide range of availability to cover operational needs, which are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including overnight shifts and weekends.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Cleans spaces inside civic buildings; including but not limited to offices, meeting rooms, common spaces, bathrooms, kitchens, change rooms, steam rooms, gymnasiums, pre-schools
• Mops, washes, waxes and buffs floors and vacuums carpeted flooring
• Washes and sanitizes washroom floors, toilets, toilet seats, hand dryers and fixtures
• Cleans mirrors, windows, window coverings, and glass
• Washes walls, doors, hardware and glass
• Cleans public entrances and exits including but not limited to glass, doors and hardware
• Cleans exterior grounds, spaces, parking lots and stairways
• Cleans, washes and sanitizes drinking fountains, sinks and counters
• Refills soap dispensers, toilet paper, paper towel and other supplies 
• Empties waste baskets, garbage cans, and recycling
• Empties Zero Waste Stations into appropriate bins
• Dusts furniture and fixtures
• Opens doors for regular operating hours, locks doors after operating hours and check to ensure that hazards are prevented
• Reports maintenance needs, damages and acts of vandalism to Supervisor
• Removes snow and ice from sidewalks, driveways and parking areas, using snow shovels and spreading ice melt/salt in areas
• Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to buildings and facilities
• Maintains storage areas, cleaning equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and orderly manner
• Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes and tags accordantly if ballast failure
• Sets up, arranges, and removes tables, chairs to prepare for events such as events and meetings
• Performs custodial and minor maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, replacing ceiling tiles, tightening loose door knobs, and unplugging toilets, sinks and drains
• Performs regularly scheduled deep cleaning tasks including, but not limited to, stripping,  waxing and buffing floors, carpet cleaning and shampooing, power washing, high and low dusting, and cleaning blinds
• Performs regularly scheduled checks of emergency lights and fire extinguishers and reports on findings 
• Provides information of building repairs and maintenance for Work Order to be approved by Supervisor
• Adheres to safety methods and procedures, departmental processes, and corporate policies
• Performs other related duties as required

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Completion of a recognized certification program in building services work and some related experience
• Experience performing a variety of routine manual tasks in care, cleaning and general maintenance of buildings
• Experience operating and using janitorial tools, equipment and supplies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Working knowledge of materials, tools, methods, safety practices and equipment used in janitorial and maintenance work
• Ability to arrange an effective work schedule under minimum direct instruction

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Fleet servicing occurs primarily at the fully equipped Garage at Manitoba Yards which houses an employee base of approximately 150 employees from various Trades but also as a Commercial Transport or Heavy Duty Mechanic, you will work with members of the Fleet and Manufacturing Services team to ensure that quality and timely work is performed to support and service our clients. The challenge this busy environment offers is in the variety of work, that includes small and heavy equipment, automobiles, light to heavy trucks, trailers and various other work related to fleet.

The City of Vancouver supports continued education and development in areas of interest for all of its employees. Equipment Services provides great opportunities for training including dealer training on newly purchased fleet equipment. There are three positions available (2 Heavy-Duty Mechanic and 1 Commercial Transport Mechanic). The regular work schedule is from 3:10 PM to 12:34 AM, Monday to Friday. The successful candidates may be required to adjust shifts and locations as operationally required.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

• Heavy Duty Mechanic or Commercial Transport Certificate of Qualifications (T.Q.), Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement
• Red Seal certification is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the automotive and heavy-duty mechanical trade.

Main Purpose and Function

Fleet and Manufacturing Services (FMS) support the City of Vancouver in being a service provider in all aspects of Fleet Management. The expertise and knowledge provided to internal and sometimes external clients by the Fleet and Manufacturing Services (FMS) includes: Engineering, Vehicle Procurement, Heavy Duty/Commercial/Automotive Maintenance and Repair, Quick Service Repairs, Machining, Mill Work, Fabrication,Vehicle Outfitting, Carpentry, Body Shop Vehicle Repair and Painting, Product Inventory/Ordering, and Small Equipment Repair.
 

The Journeyperson Metal Fabricator will work with members of the Fleet and Manufacturing Services team to ensure that quality and timely work is performed to support and service our clients. The challenge this busy environment offers is in the variety of work, from small and heavy equipment, to automobiles and light to heavy trucks, as well as Plant and Facilities maintenance, Manufacturing and Building maintenance.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Journeyperson Metal Fabricator will perform a variety of skilled shop and field work at the journeyperson level which includes: welding, fitting, brazing, heating, cutting and laying out tasks while you are repairing and maintaining City equipment, structures and buildings.
 

There is advanced work in tempering, cutting, straightening, bending, shaping and drawing out machinery part and tools. Duties will also include performing skilled welding, heating, cutting and tapping tasks utilizing steel, cast ironand other ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
 

Job functions will be performed in accordance with established trade practices. You may supervise the work of subordinates performing less complex related tasks. Some duties may be more complex and difficult requiring the use of independent judgement in determining methods and procedures in solving unusual problems related to complex fitting, fabrication, welding, layout and design of tasks. Assignments will be both written and verbal, and may be accompanied by sketches or blueprints.
 

The regular work schedule is from 3:10 PM to 12:34 AM, Monday to Friday. The successful candidate may be required to adjust shifts and locations as operationally required.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

• Completion of grade 10 supplemented by technical courses related to the work with considerable Journeyperson experience.
• Metal Fabrication Certificate of Qualification (T.Q.), Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement or Certification of Apprenticeship.
• Red Seal certification is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the steel fabrication trade.
• Thorough knowledge of the use and care of tools and equipment in finishing and fitting a variety of metal parts and objects in the maintenance, overhaul and repair of construction and maintenance equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade.
• Ability to weld aluminum cast iron and steel, layout and make patterns.
• Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions which may be accompanied by sketches and diagrams.
• A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with members of the public, suppliers,and internal clients.
• Agility, muscular coordination and sufficient strength to permit the performance of heavy manual labour.

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

• A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
  • 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
  • 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
