The Occupational Safety Coordinator will work closely with managers, supervisors and individual employees to promote occupational health and safety within the Brandon plant to develop safer, healthier and more efficient methods of working.  This involves maintaining health and safety systems, identifying hazards, and providing advice and support on accident prevention and occupational health.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

  • Coordinate and conduct training sessions for all employees regarding health and safety practices and legislation
  • Work in conjunction with Joint H&S committee members and Safety Captains
  • Work in conjunction with the SHARP Coordinators to promote behavioral based safety program
  • Develop and communicate H&S policies, procedures, training and orientation manuals,
  • Injury statics analysis  
  • Injury action plan development and implantation
  • Perform risk assessments and complete hazard assessments of all job functions
  • Perform workplace inspections and complete internal audits as required
  • Perform new equipment inspections
  • Develop and implement hazard control  
  • Perform accident investigations
  • Coordinate Crisis Response programs
  • Work in conjunction with the Ergonomist to identify and control ergonomic hazards. 
  • Identify safety training requirements, make recommendations to Safety committees and schedule the training as approved and required
  • Assist in the identification, development and provision of appropriate health and safety related information, instruction and training (i.e., health and safety handbook and newsletter)
  • Maintain a WHMIS Program, including a current SDS and staff training
  • Assist in the development, coordination and maintenance of emergency preparedness plans
  • Work closely with the managers, staff and contractors ensuring their workers comply with safety legislation while at work
  • Monitor and advise on legislative and technical changes relating to health and safety
  • Maintain and expand upon professional competence
  • Be an active member of the joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Develop JHA, JSA’s and contribute to the safety contents of SOP’s for on the job training.
  • Maintain safety related software programs and provide the information as required.
  • Participate in accident investigations and assist supervisors with safety related issues.
  • Initiate/develop safety promotion programs.
  • Monitor machine or equipment changes, ensuring that health and safety precautions are being considered.
  • Identify potentially hazardous situations and take proactive measures to correct them
  • Periodically, act as a team leader for task forces and teams (e.g. leading several supervisors on an audit)
  • Review internal and external health and safety reports to determine areas that need improvement; implement measures to minimize occurrence of incidents.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Grade 12 completion or equivalency 
  • Completion or enrollment in an accredited Occupational Health and Safety certification program
  • Minimum two years experience in the administration of Occupational Health and Safety policies and legislative compliance
  • Experience in a health and safety role, preferably within a manufacturing environment 
  • Certification in advanced first aid training or EMR considered an asset
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation combined with training hazard recognition, assessment, and control.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work with union and management personnel using a collaborative approach.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Strong computer application (Microsoft Office) and analytical skills

On-site occupational and non-occupational medical care, including but not limited to:

 

  • Working with, or leading the medical team in emergency medical situations following ACLS and ITLS guidelines and medical directives
  • Utilizing virtual resources in the course of treatment, such as consulting the emergency physician on call, or arranging medical transport
  • Stabilizing critically ill or injured patients for transport

  • Providing health teaching and health promotion

  • Testing such as ECG, visual acuity, audiometric and pulmonary function, etc

 

Disability case management activities, including but not limited to:

Qualifications

 

 

All positions will require:

 

  • Successful completion and graduation from a Bachelor of Nursing program or equivalent

  • Provide support and follow up with the supervisors and senior supervisors regarding accident and incident investigation reports; specifically follow up on outstanding or ineffective corrective actions
  • Enter any and all work orders upon receipt from the supervisors from safety tour reports.  Ensure that they have been properly classified according the work order classification system and communicate any other information required to the Maintenance Planner.
  • Promote the Health and Safety plans, goals and objectives
  • Engage and involve workers in Health and Safety programs by ensuring compliance with active policies and procedures, planned task observations in order to ensure understanding, and inform supervisor if policies and procedures are not being met. 
  • Communicate any and all pertinent or emergency Health and Safety Issues or Concerns with the Senior Leadership Team in the absence of the Health and Safety Manager.  Ensure SLT is made aware of any claims with special circumstance or concerns that may arise out of a claim and approach that is being taken
  • Assist in the coaching and mentoring of the H&S Coordinators with effective tools and practices
  • Provide support to the First Aid Team, supervisors and employees in the event of a plant emergency
  • Other duties may be assigned

What You’ll Bring:

  • Post-secondary degree / diploma from an occupational health and safety / industrial hygiene program/disability management.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Three to five years of supervisory experience, preferably in a manufacturing setting
  • Flexibility to work various shifts and overtime as needed

The Health and Wellness Consultant is responsible for research, design, development, implementation, facilitation, and oversight of the City of Saskatoon’s corporate health, wellness, and disability programs with Employee Health Services (EHS).  This position is also responsible for facilitation, implementation, evaluation, continuous improvement, and service quality assurance of corporate programs that are designed to reduce absenteeism, maintain employee wellness and ensure that employees stay at work and are returned to work as soon as safely possible following an injury or illness.  

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads the development and implementation of the corporate health, wellness, disability programs    by developing and implementing initiatives pertaining to physical, mental, and organizational wellbeing. 
  • Manages claims for ill or injured employees, including coordinating health assessments for employees and facilitating early intervention and return-to-work plans. Also recommends appropriate courses of action for short term disability, sick bank and long-term disability claims.
  • Facilitates and leads meetings with all involved stakeholders to achieve effective case management and return to work agreements. Acts as a liaison between external agencies or parties (WCB, Licenced Health Care Professionals, Benefits Providers) to facilitate effective and timely management of active claims.
  • Oversee, as assigned, the activities of contracted parties in regard to attendance management, disability management, ergonomic assessments, individual third-party medical assessments, training, and other contracted health, wellness and attendance management activities as deemed necessary.
  • Acts as a backup to the Alcohol and Drug Program Administrator as assigned. 
  • Manges and utilizes disability management software to administer, track, manage claims documents/progress and communication with supervisor and employee.
  • Develops and facilitates training programs to educate supervisors/managers about the duty to accommodate, roles and responsibilities and other various health, and wellness management programs.
  • Ensures the integrity of the data collection and storage process for health and wellness claims and benefits. Analyses data and prepares division/department specific reports to assist leaders understand utilization of programs. 
  • Collaborates with members of Human Resources Division to develop, implement, and maintain HR and corporate initiatives and ensures that all initiatives and day-to-day duties are linked to and consistent with the Corporate Strategic Plan.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Degree in related discipline.
  • Four to six years’ experience in a related field, e.g., workers’ compensation, human resources, disability management, case management, wellness, or occupational health and safety.
  • CPHR, CRSP, or CEP designation would be an asset.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational health techniques, disability management theory and practices and absenteeism management.
  • Considerable knowledge of civic policy and provincial legislation pertaining to occupational health and safety, workers’ compensation and the duty to accommodate.
  • Ability to prepare and present complex policy and statistical reports, both verbally and in written form.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise a high level of confidentiality and trust.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with management, co-workers, union representatives and external agencies.
  • Proven ability to work in a highly unionized organization.
  • Skill in consulting, facilitating, conflict resolution and decision-making.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Coordination 

  • Acts as the first point-of-contact for environmental and health inquiries and incidents.
  • Provides guidance to team members on environmental and health matters, and escalates inquiries, where appropriate
  • Coordinates the implementation of environmental, health and safety programs along with related processes, procedures and resources
  • Coordinates environmental, health and safety activities including but not limited to attending tenant OSH committee meetings, attending environmental committee meetings and activities, undertaking incident investigation and resolution, completing equipment and systems registration, developing emergency response procedures and business continuity planning activities, completing and delivering training, completing annual management system re-registration, managing data and generating reports, and conducting environmental compliance audits.
  • Researches environmental, health and safety matters; provides findings and recommendations.
  • Maintains and assists with the creation of environmental, health and safety documentation including but not limited to plans, processes, forms, logbooks, and procedures.
  • Create and maintain documentation including but not limited to instruction sheets, checklists, forms, and training materials.
  • Support construction activity teams (Projects and O&M) by creating, distributing, verifying and maintaining documentation such as work instructions, checklists, training materials
  • Conducts regular inspections of facilities to mitigate any Environmental regulatory issues and/or Health and Safety Concerns before an incident or service call is received.
  • Maintains business continuity and emergency management plans and procedures
  • Participates in field inspections, job observations, health, safety and environment audits and other types of reviews for the purpose of monitoring compliance to environmental and health regulations and identifying risks.  Provides findings about risks and suggestions for improvement.

Incident Investigation, Resolution & Reduction

  • Assists in the investigation and resolution of incidents including root-cause analysis and providing probable causes of incidents and recommendations for resolution
  • Coordinates the implementation of corrective and preventative measures
  • Assists in the identification and analysis of trends.  Communicates observations and provides suggestions for incident reduction measures

Audit Compliance, Data Maintenance & Reporting 

  • Maintains all environmental, health and safety data including but not limited to incident data, and regulatory and process compliance data within applicable databases and all other types of information storage systems
  • Assists in the audit of compliance records and all other environmental, health and safety data
  • Prepares and distributes various environmental, health and safety related reports including but not limited to incident reports
  • Experience with database development, programing and maintenance considered an asset
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Strong background in environmental management system development and administration, with knowledge of environmental regulations and environmental compliance auditing an asset.
  • Certification in one or more of the following – Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety; Certificate in Environmental Management through a Community College; University degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies
  • 1 to 3 years of environmental, health and safety work experience
  • Understanding of environmental, health and safety regulatory requirements
  • Understanding of emergency management requirements
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills along with ability to coordinate multiple requirements (i.e. processes, activities, projects, emergency response procedures, etc.) simultaneously
