AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Crossing Guards, this position is responsible to safely escort pedestrians, as defined in the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) across roadways at designated school crossings by monitoring traffic flow gaps and assuming right of way, while adhering to regulations, policies and procedures.

• • Control and obey all regulations, policies and procedures to ensure pedestrians are safely assisted at designated school crossings.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to the public, ensuring safe crossing rules are communicated clearly, followed and reinforced as required.
  • Document and communicate all incidents and/or unsafe conditions to management, school officials and/or Peel Regional Police.
  • Adhere to emergency vehicle right of way, ensuring they have priority over both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Comply with all safety requirements by using and wearing all required safety equipment and clothing.
  • Assist in training new crossing guards as required.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

• • Must have the ability to remain alert and perform responsibilities quickly and safely.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with management, pedestrians, residents, school officials and police.
  • Must be able to move briskly and repeatedly in and out of intersection and stand for 45 to 90 minutes, 3 times a day in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to extend an arm out parallel to shoulder holding a “STOP” sign (weight of approximately 1 pound) for up to one minute frequently.
  • Must be able to effectively hear and see oncoming traffic at a safe distance (approximately 300 feet).
  • Previous experience dealing with the public and/or children is an asset.
  • Training on the Highway Traffic Act and Health and Safety Act as it relates to the job and City policies and procedures is provided to all School Crossing Guards by the City.
  • A Police Vulnerable Sector Check is required at applicant expense.
  • A Medical Evaluation is required at applicant expense.

**Preference will be given to students that have a permanent residency in Brampton.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform access control provision duties, verify visitors coming on-site.
• Screen client employees and contractors by asking questions and with handheld wand metal detection devices.
• De-escalate situations where individuals may decline site policies and procedures, deny access to anyone that does so.
• Protect client employees and assets.
• Foot patrols around the client site including internal patrols.
• Follow security breach procedures by notifying supervisors or other appropriate personnel when security breaches occur.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Valid Ontario Security License
• Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate
• Thorough understanding of security protocols and procedures including emergency response.
• 3 years of security experience preferably in an asset protection or corporate role.
• Be able to work the scheduled shift every weekend.

Observes and reports activities and incidents at an assigned client site, providing for the security and safety of client property and personnel. Makes periodic patrols to check for irregularities and to inspect protection devices and fire control equipment. Preserves order and may act to enforce regulations and directives for the site pertaining to personnel, visitors, and premises. Controls access to client site or facility through the admittance process Patrols assigned site on foot or in vehicle; checks for unsafe conditions, hazards, unlocked doors, security violations, blocked entrances and exits, mechanical problems, and unauthorized persons. Protects evidence or scene of incident in the event of accidents, emergencies, or security investigations. Responds to incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, elevator emergency, hazardous materials, inclement weather, and other incidents. Reporting to the Supervisor, School Crossing Assistance Program, or designate, be responsible for directing the crossing of school-age children and pedestrians across a highway at an assigned location/intersection during designated periods. Duties include directing the movement of children across a highway; maintaining contact with school(s) and reporting student problems; notifying supervisor of unsafe conditions, traffic violations and problems; maintaining equipment provided in good condition; and participating in data collection.

Requirements:

Knowledge and skill generally associated with the completion of partial high school and three (3) months of experience working with children, or have an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Good communication skills, both oral and written. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to deal with children, parents and the general public in a courteous and tactful manner.

Clean and neat in appearance in order to meet the public.

Suited to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Able to work in difficult situations. Must be physically and mentally fit; able to climb, stretch, twist, lift and carry items of up to 1 kg.; stand and walk for periods of up to 1.5 hours; good hearing and visual senses and perception. Circumstantially and temperamentally adjusted to work alone and to work split shifts.

Able to access designated crossing on foot in a reasonable period of time.

Must have and maintain a telephone at place of residence. Must be, and remain, a resident of the City of Oshawa.

Knowledge of Traffic Laws.
