Operator 4 (Heavy Equipment Operator) Full-time Job

Reporting to the Manager, Roads Operations and under the direction of the Supervisor, Roads Maintenance and/or Working Foreperson, Lead Hand, operate various pieces of heavy equipment.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain various units of Operations Services equipment such as wheeled and track excavation equipment, rubber tire backhoe/loaders, motor graders, combination plow/spreader trucks, water trucks, sidewalk plows, tractors and other units listed under Type “A”, “B”, “C” and “D” equipment
- Provide input into the development and improvement of safety procedures.
Work in accordance with the City of Oshawa’s Safe Work Standards, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and TSSA Guidelines - Physically work along with an assigned crew when required
- Perform various duties related to Operations Summer and Winter Control/Call Board activities
- Support and demonstrate the City of Oshawa core values of Authenticity, Courage, and Trust
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Ten (10) years of heavy civil construction/excavating experience with a major emphasis on road building, sewer and water installation, general grading and demolition. Six (6) years of this experience should involve the operation of related heavy equipment with a speciality in the operation of graders, excavators and rubber tire backhoe/loaders
- Demonstrated ability to operate and successful completion of written tests on all relevant units listed under Type “A”, Type “B”, Type “C” and Type “D” units of equipment (CUPE Local #250 Collective Agreement, Appendix B)
- Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Driver’s Licence (Minimum Class “DZ”) in good standing and be able to pass the Corporation’s tests for motor vehicle operation
- Physically fit and able to climb, lift and move heavy items (80 lbs/approx. 36 kgs). Capable of performing the work assigned in a safe manner.
Working knowledge of and ability to apply relevant safety policies, standards and legislation (Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act) - Good communication skills and ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, which deal with standardized situations like underground utility locates and engineering drawings. Able to complete forms and records relevant to the job
- Good interpersonal skills; common sense and courtesy to deal with the general public and to discuss routine information with colleagues. Neat in work habits which broadens out to the appearance of the worksite, trenches and excavations
- Able to work with minimal supervision; personal qualities of reliability and co-operation. Sound judgement and initiative relating to the need for attendance to matters outside normal working hours, like winter and summer callouts and responding to requests from Fire Services in emergencies
- Willing and capable of training new operators on any piece of equipment
- The job requires you to work scheduled evening and night shifts in accordance with Article 11.05 (c) of the CUPE #250 Collective Agreement
- Must serve on the Operations Summer and Winter Call Board

Bus Driver Full Time & Part Time vacancies available
Start Rate (Non-negotiable): $30.83 per hour
7 Week Training Rate (Non-negotiable): $17.03 per hour
Available Shifts: Scheduled hours may be a minimum of 18 hours and maximum of 33 hours per week for Part Time and 40 hours for Full Time positions. You will support a 24/7 operation, including working different shifts such as days, evenings, weekends, split shifts, and holidays.
Work Location: Driver routes may be assigned anywhere within the Greater Golden Horseshoe based on operational needs.
Based on business needs and the seniority bidding process, a Driver may be assigned to any of the following home bases:
- East Gwillimbury Garage.
- Oshawa Garage.
- Steeprock Garage.
- Streetsville Garage.
- Hamilton Garage.
- Kitchener Garage.
- Niagara Falls Garage.
What will I be doing?
- Transport and assists customers and baggage if required.
- Examine proof of payment in the form of proper fare media for the zones travelled and operate fare equipment.
- Take responsibility for fare transactions and tickets for various time periods.
- Ensure all Transit Regulations are observed by customers.
- Make announcements and provide customer service.
- Performs pre- and post-trip bus inspections in accordance with the most current regulations and Metrolinx policy.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of the bus.
- Ensure seating adjustments are made to assist customers who have special needs.
- Follow prescribed protocols in response to different levels of Safety Alerts.
- Represent Metrolinx and the Metrolinx brand and work in accordance with Metrolinx customer and safety charters when providing customer service.
- Must be able to work effectively in a dynamic work environment with a diverse customer base.
- Perform other tasks as assigned and agreed upon with the Union, including non-driving tasks.
Work Conditions:
- Drivers must perform all tasks related to boarding/deboarding and securing a wheeled mobility aid (WMA) customer.
- May be asked to assist with loading and unloading customer baggage. which may from time to time involve some degree of heavy lifting.
- Is in sitting position for extended periods of time without relief.
- Need high degree of visual concentration.
- May experience variable weather conditions for short periods, also noise, fumes, dirt, dust, and work with the public.
- May have overnight travel.
- Will work rotating shift work, including split shifts, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week plus statutory holidays, and comply with Ontario Commercial Driving Hours of Service regulations.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
Have a current and valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license or higher for a minimum of two (2) years with no more than two (2) demerit points and have no pending charges under the Highway Traffic Act that may result in two (2) or more demerit points.
- Level of reading, writing, and learning skills normally attained through the completion of a high school education
- Minimum of six (6) months public facing customer service experience (dealing directly with the public/customers).
- Experience driving a commercial vehicle or other large vehicle is an asset.
- Ability to Assist customers and emergency services (under the direction from Network Operations Control).
- Interpersonal skills to maintain customer relations.
- Good verbal communication skills to communicate with customers in different situations (detours, emergency info, etc.)
- Require the ability to receive, understand and follow instructions audibly in the field on a regular basis.
- Able to work independently within varying shifts/schedules, sit for extended periods of time, exercise a high degree of visual concentration, and drive large vehicles safely in variable weather and traffic conditions.
- Capable of dealing with cash, tickets, and tariffs.
