Responsibilities
Reporting to the Operations Director, the Mechanic is responsible for the operations of this position, maintaining machinery, equipment and vehicles functional. His role is to perform the installation, maintenance and repairs, both electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic, of the equipment and vehicles used at work. Do what is necessary to keep the garage clean and tidy at all times. The Mechanic performs all of the following functions;
- Ensures the optimal operational maintenance of all equipment and vehicles;
- Performs preventive maintenance on equipment according to established schedule. Performs various troubleshooting, repair and manufacturing tasks on equipment;
- Participates in equipment adjustments. Performs repairs written on work sheets left by drivers;
- Works from maintenance or manufacturing schedules, detailed drawings, sketches, specifications, manuals, or verbal and written instructions;
- Mechanically assembles machinery. Recommends possible modifications to equipment;
- Perform periodic maintenance operations such as oil changes, lubrication, brakes, tire rotations, etc.
- Organize your work according to requests and the availability of equipment to be repaired
- See to ordering the parts required for manufacturing and repairs as needed;
- Be aware of and work in accordance with current safety standards and regulations;
- May be called upon to train and provide coaching when required;
- Actively participates in improving the department's productivity, improving products and working methods.
SKILLS
Education and experience:
- DEP in heavy vehicle mechanics or other relevant training and experience;
- Mechanics: 1 year (Desired)
Competence profile:
- A minimum welding skill is required, any additional certifications or qualifications will be considered an asset;
- Any electrical knowledge will be considered an asset;
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors regardless of changing seasonal conditions;
- Must be able to work overtime when required;
- Know how to drive heavy manual trucks. Having a class 1 or 3 is an asset
- Must be available to be on call in the evenings and weekends on a rotating basis.

- Understand mechanical design concepts to be able to replace failed pulleys and bearings with replacements that don’t match design without impacting performance of a conveyor (speed, torque, etc.)

Electrical
- Use a digital multimeter to resistance test de-energized circuits.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose both the power and the control branch of motor controls circuits.
- Read, interpret and create or modify electrical drawings/schematics
PLC/Controls
- Go online with PLC processors to aid in troubleshooting
- Burn EEPROMs
- Understand PLC networks, such as ControlNet, DeviceNet, etc.
Welding or Fabrication
- MIG, stick and TIG weld in all positions.
- Understand difference between structural and non-structural welds and when to apply them
- Repair broken components where factors such as position or load may impact the repair, such as motor mounting plates or conveyor legs.
- Use vertical mill/drill and other machining tools
MINIMUM EDUCATION
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Certificates in Industrial Maintenance/Mechatronics, electrical or mechanical trade or related area and an associate degree in a related area preferred.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
- Four (4) years experience in Industrial Maintenance with proficiency in knowledge and demonstrated skills in mechanical power transmission, electrical and working knowledge of PLC/Controls and welding/fabrication skills through job experience, related military experience and/or related education required.
- Multiple certificates and degrees may be assessed by manager and HR to determine relevancy to minimum qualifications and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to follow procedures as directed by work orders or high-level technicians/management

This position will be responsible for...
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs to conveyor system.
- Complete and maintain all documentation related to the Maintenance CMMS and PM program.
- Set up and maintain machinery to comply with current safety standards.
- Complete all preventive and predictive maintenance to conveyor system and base building as directed.
- Work well with others (Maintenance teammates across all shifts and with internal customers).
- Knowledge of conveyor systems, carton-sorting systems, mobile equipment used in distribution centers.
- Understand various testing procedures to diagnose and implement repairs.
- Troubleshoot equipment components using schematics, panel layouts and manufacturer specification manuals to effect repairs.
- Effect repairs to the installed base of pallet rack, pick modules, dock components and materials handling equipment as required.
- Assist in receiving incoming shipments of needed inventory and replacement parts. Participate as necessary in response to trouble calls.
- Assist in planning, setting priorities and developing the daily work schedule as directed. Assist in development of department talent.
- Communicate at a high level to peers and other department employees.
- Miscellaneous tasks as assigned by the Operations Manager.

Education/Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent required and 4+ years of experience performing mechanical maintenance duties in a manufacturing/packaging environment, or equivalent combination of vocational education and experience.
- Journeyman Tradesperson, Interprovincial Red Seal, Registered Apprentice Tradesperson or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of Conveyor Systems, carton sorting systems and mobile equipment used in distribution Centers Demonstrated mechanical knowledge.
Physical/Cognitive Requirements

• Ability to read, write and interpret information.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
• Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
You will be responsible for ensuring the inspection, maintenance and construction of bridges, culverts, retaining walls and other railway structures including buildings and other facilities in accordance with the requirements of CP’s standards and any other applicable regulating/governing organizations. You will oversee a staff of unionized employees to ensure safety and productivity in full compliance with standards, policies, regulations and operating rules. In addition, you will provide leadership to help ensure the safe, reliable and cost-effective operation of the railway as it relates to the Structures Department.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Inspect bridges, culverts, retaining walls, Structures and Facilities in accordance with all applicable Regulatory and CPKC Policies and procedures
- Heavily involved in the development and execution of multi-year construction and maintenance plans for assigned territory
- Develop and execute Safety Programs to ensure that employees work in a safe and approved manner (compliance with Policies, SPC’s, Work practices)
- Ensure that work is carried out in a manner that complies with applicable collective bargaining agreements
- Supervise and lead staff to ensure the safe and effective execution of work
- Responsible for cost-effective management and delivery of Capital, Programmed Expense and Operating budgets
- Liaise and coordinate with regulatory agencies, third parties and other CPKC departments to ensure the timely execution of Structures maintenance and project work
- Work interdependently with other CPKC operating departments and internal customers.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Previous experience in Engineering (Engineer/Technologist) is considered an asset
- Previous experience in construction an asset
- Must be or become a qualified bridge inspector
- Effective communication skills, written/oral and understanding of computer systems
- Strong Leadership skills
