As a Labourer II, you will assist in the construction and maintenance of parks areas throughout the City of Edmonton. Specific duties may include:
- Perform semi-skilled manual labour related to landscape construction, restoration and site reclamation work for parks
- Operate, maintain and know standard methods of safely using a variety of hand and power tools used in landscape construction work area, including landscape construction related hand tools such as shovels, rakes and carpentry tools, and power tools such as a chainsaw, sawzall, tamper, jack hammer, post pounder, generator and water pump
- Perform duties with general knowledge and awareness of safety precautions and typical safety hazards associated with work area
- Frequently operate City motor vehicles and equipment, including pick-up truck/crew cab with passengers, truck with trailer and toolcat with attachments
- Work independently when familiar with duties; work is monitored by supervisor to ensure production meets standards
- Construct and restore Open Space such as Sports Fields, golf courses, river valley trails and shrub beds, landscaping and laying sod
- Construct and restore hard landscaping structures and retaining walls, fences, bollards
- Install and construct sports fields and sports specific fixtures such as chain link fences, soccer sets and jump pits
- Move and transport waste and materials; load and unload materials and equipment for trucks
- Read and interpret surface grading plans and drawings
- Perform related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 10
- 1 year of experience in landscape construction and refurbishment; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered
- Extensive knowledge of Edmonton roadway systems will be considered an asset
- Completion of Chainsaw training will be considered an asset
- Knowledge and awareness of safety precautions and typical safety hazards associated with assigned work
- Ability to use the motor vehicles as indicated, and use necessary hand and power tools for assigned work
- Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions
- Ability to maintain simple records
- Physical ability and manual dexterity to performing the duties assigned, including repetitive heavy manual labour, such as lifting up to 50 lbs, for extended periods of time under various weather conditions at various heights
- Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring as required
- Emergency Level First Aid Certificate and WHMIS training will be considered an asset
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Air Brake Certification on your current licence is an asset. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

What will you be doing?
- Provide guidance to the driver in backing up situations
- Load and clean excess materials in and around waste/recycling bins/carts
- Move and/or position empty waste/recycling bin/carts back to their original or designated locations at customer sites
- Perform manual swamper duties (including heavy lifting/pushing) associated with maneuvering full waste/recycling bins and carts to staging locations for collection
- Adhere to safety and environmental regulations and work procedures
- Maintain a positive customer service attitude in the performance of all duties
- Perform related duties as required including bin maintenance
- Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle including cleaning hoppers/traps daily
Work Environment:
- Driving for extended periods in all weather conditions. Physically strenuous labor is required when maneuvering bins/carts to pick-up areas and return them to their original locations
Qualifications

- Possession, or eligibility to obtain a license to practice with the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association
- Minimum of 3 years post Doctor Veterinary Medicine schooling experience in the field of zoological medicine; OR 5 years post-Doctor Veterinary Medicine in general veterinary medicine, preferably with mixed and/or exotic animal experience
- Board certification or eligibility with the American College of Zoological Medicine or equivalent, is considered an asset
- CFIA accreditation to certify health for interstate and international transport of animals
- Membership with the Canadian Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians, American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, and/or other professional associations with connections to the field of zoological medicine
- Knowledge and expertise of clinical veterinary medicine disciplines and the ability to perform diagnosis, treatment, nutritional analysis, and surgical procedures for the care of exotic and domestic animals
- Knowledge and understanding of the comparative physiology of disease and an ability to apply these principles to diagnosing and treating illness in exotic and domestic animals and determine the best course of treatment
- Proven ability to research and develop innovative approaches for animal health and nutrition issues
- Advanced management, technical or scientific skill related to the care of exotic animals
- Demonstrated ability to treat animals with respect, kindness and sensitivity
- Demonstrated physical dexterity to skillfully work with animals of all sizes and accurately perform procedures and surgeries
- Implement and to ensure compliance with the City’s policies and procedures
- Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
