About Our Opportunity

 

We are seeking a Park Attendant who will assist us with seasonal operation and maintenance. This will include infrastructure, vehicles, grounds and equipment, providing visitor information, monitoring park activities for regulation compliance, advising visitors of park regulations and reporting non-compliance to Conservation Officers. You will ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and department policies, and will be an active participant in implementing the department Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Programs.


This position requires the ability to work as part of a team, and performs strenuous manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Duties often require working irregularly scheduled hours, weekends, evenings and holidays. Must be willing to attend department training in duties related to this position.


This position reports to the Park Caretaker.

Primary Accountabilities

 

Under the general direction of the Chief Park Caretaker, or designate, the Park Attendant is responsible for the seasonal operation and maintenance of designated provincial parks(s) including:

 

  • Infrastructure maintenance, vehicles, grounds and equipment;
  • Customer service and relations;
  • Monitoring park activities for regulation compliance;
  • Advising visitors of park regulations and reporting non-compliance;
  • Using the computer-based reservation and registration system;
  • Processing financial transactions, cash handling;
  • Compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and Workplace policies, Procedures and all Safe Work Practices at all times when on duty.

Qualifications and Experience

 

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have:

 

  • Valid N.S. Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent.
  • Valid (Standard) First Aid certificate and WHMIS training.
  • Working knowledge and previous experience in computer use including: internet, email, and web-based applications.
  • Experience in general carpentry; building and grounds maintenance; general machine maintenance; use of tractors, ride on mowers, chainsaws and clearing saws, push mowers, string trimmers and hand and power tools.
  • Physical fitness levels suitable to support strenuous manual tasks in an outdoor environment and all weather conditions experienced during the park season.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing and to work independently.

 

Assets:

 

  • Customer service training;
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and sanitation requirements;
  • Training, experience in or demonstrated ability for ensuring compliance of regulations in a public setting;
  • Good general knowledge of local history and points of interest;
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations; and
  • Forest Safety Society certified for power saw and spacing saws.

Working Conditions

As part of a team, the Park Attendant is expected to work effectively with due regard to personal and co-worker safety and cooperation. Most tasks will be in an outdoor environment and may involve strenuous activities in varied weather conditions and extremes.

 

  • Employee walks for extended periods of time and distance over both even and uneven terrain while patrolling the park.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 lbs.
  • Must work weekends.

 

All personnel may be called upon for assistance in emergency situations.

Additional Information

 

This competition will be used to fill seasonal opportunities at Rissers Beach.  These positions are a seasonal term, with an estimated end date of October 19, 2024. 



Please note, the seasonal status for these positions is expected to be 10 weeks to 4 months, however the actual status will depend on the start date of the successful candidate.

You will use specialized tools and equipment located at a government facility designed and equipped for mechanical work, assist with field repairs as required, and other related duties as required to complete equipment repairs, modifications and/or preventative maintenance.

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

You have completed high school and have a Provincial Certificate of Qualification in the Truck and Transport Trade plus five (5) years of diversified mechanical experience.

Upon hire, applicants will be required to successfully complete Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) training as part of their probationary requirements.

A valid Nova Scotia driver's license with Air Brakes and acceptable driving record is required.

A Provincial Certificate of Qualification in Heavy Duty Equipment and Air Conditioning Certification are desirable. Knowledge of computer controlled diagnostic technology and computer competency are considered assets. Successful completion of training and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, First Aid and WHMIS are further assets to be considered.

You consistently demonstrate initiative in your role; remaining up to date in changes to equipment, methods and technology within the mechanical field. Your exceptional communication skills will assist you when working with staff to help diagnose and resolve equipment issues. You are a self-motivated individual who works both independently with minimal supervision and participates fully as an effective team player. You consistently maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for clients.

The Maintenance Team Lead is responsible for overseeing the execution of activities performed by Technicians and external vendors to ensure that work is performed in accordance to established processes and practices and is in compliant with all internal and external requirements including but not limited to environmental, health and safety, fire protection. In addition to people leadership responsibilities, the Maintenance Team Lead also performs and delivers preventative and corrective maintenance. 

 

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

People Leadership

Demonstrates strong, competent leadership for team members to guide them in reaching their full potential and meeting their objectives, which supports achievement of our corporate goals. Specifically, these responsibilities include but not limited to:

 

  • Full involvement with recruiting talent.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Oversees the proper application and execution of processes and practices to ensure achievement of and adherence to all requirements.
  • Oversees and performs regular facility, facility mechanical and electrical equipment and systems monitoring and inspection, preventative and corrective maintenance to ensure facility uptime objectives are met, uninterrupted client operation and asset integrity of assigned facility are maintained. Provides observations about facility, facility mechanical and electrical equipment and systems conditions and deficiencies and provides recommendations for enhancement and repair.
  • Oversees and monitors assigned facility by conducting facility walkthroughs, mechanical and electrical equipment and system monitoring and inspection.
  • Oversees and responds to routine service requests and performs preventative and corrective maintenance on facility mechanical and electrical equipment and systems
  • Oversees the maintenance of as well as maintains work order records within service management maintenance database. Initiates documents to obtain formal approval of work required.
  • Coordinates and assists in the implementation of preventative maintenance program. Ensures that deficiencies are identified, recorded and escalated, and that related documentations are maintained.
  • Oversees and maintains all tools and accurate inventory for their assigned technicians and arranges for repair and replacement where required.

 

Client Relations

  • Assists in enhancing tenant and customer satisfaction and maintaining positive relations through a manner in which work is performed and services delivered.
  • Ensures constant and effective communication with leadership and clients.

 

Administration

  • Develops work schedules and gives work assignments to team members.
  • Performs audits on repairs done by teams.
  • Ensures Work Orders are completed and tracked properly.
  • Assesses escalation calls and dispatches Technicians according to needs.
  • Plans and schedules maintenance tasks and promotes maintenance schedule adherence ensuring adequate coverage at all times (breaks, absence, vacation, etc.).
  • Ensures that all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and practices are followed.
  • Coordinates and participates in facility-related projects.
  • Submits all expenditures on a timely basis.
  • Must be able and willing to work shifts, be available for on-call/standby and emergency call-outs as they arise.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

 

  • College Diploma/Certification required
  • Five (5+) years of relevant experience working in HVAC, Property Management or equivalent. 
  • Ability to lead and manage a team of individuals and previous people leadership experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience administering processes and practices relating to facility operations and maintenance
  • Knowledgeable in building mechanical and electrical equipment and system troubleshooting and resolution skills
  • Current knowledge of Building codes and standards
  • Possesses a high level of environmental, health and safety mindset. Keeps abreast of current knowledge of fire, life, safety and building codes and standards and ability to research and apply related codes and Standards
  • Strong client-service orientation along with a high sense of urgency
